Uber: Food delivery startup Bolt’s UK tax tribunal win could be good for Uber

A significant victory for Estonian ride-hailing and food delivery startup Bolt against Britain's tax authority last week could prove to be positive news for its rival Uber.Bolt took on HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over whether it was liable to pay a 20% tax charge on its gross income from customers or its margin.Elevate Your Tech Prowess with High-Value Skill CoursesOffering CollegeCourseWebsiteIndian School of BusinessISB Digital TransformationVisitIIT DelhiIITD Certificate Programme in Data Science & Machine…

See 100 lightning bolts rip through the sky in one time-lapse photo

Astrophotographer Uğur İkizler has managed to capture one of the most breathtaking and somewhat terrifying images of lightning I’ve ever seen. A time-lapse created by the photographer showcases over 100 different lightning bolts, all of which were captured during a thunderstorm in Turkey. The storm broke over the town of Mudanya. When it did, İkizler grabbed a camera and began capturing the bolts as they hit. Altogether the time-lapse was captured over the course of 50 minutes. It isn’t unusual for this many…

Damir Imamović: The World and All That It Holds review – lightning bolts of emotion | Music

After an adolescence sheltering from the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian war, Damir Imamović dedicated his musical life to researching, performing and making accessible the sevdalinka (AKA sevdah) of his childhood. These emotional southern Slavic songs of loss, love and longing find a fascinating new home on his eighth album. Written as a companion piece to his friend Aleksandar Hemon’s novel of the same name, it amplifies the story of two male Bosnian soldiers, one Muslim, one Jewish, who fall in love during the first…

tesla model y: Tesla recalls 3,470 Model Y vehicles over loose bolts

Tesla Inc said it is recalling 3,470 2022 through 2023 Model Y vehicles in the United States because bolts securing the second-row seatback frames may not have been securely tightened, according to a filing made public Saturday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said a loose seat frame bolt may reduce seat belt system performance, increasing injury risks during a crash.Tesla told NHTSA it has identified five warranty claims since December that may be related to the conditions described above. Tesla…

Scientists used a laser beam to control lightning bolts

Scientists have found a competitor to the lightning rod — one of the most tried and true methods of controlling where lightning strikes. The new method is far more expensive, but it allowed scientists to use a laser beam to control lightning bolts. The physicists working on the experiment did so from a mountaintop in Switzerland, where they used a high-powered laser to steer the lightning bolts where they wanted them to go. They say that the advancement could lead to more ways to use lasers to help protect…

Scientists use powerful lasers to divert lightning bolts

Using lasers to divert potentially damaging lightning strikes may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but some clever folks in Switzerland have apparently achieved such a feat. The technology, if fully developed, would be more effective than the long-used Franklin rod and therefore could become a valuable protection measure for sites like power stations, airports, and launchpads. A research team led by physicist Aurélien Houard of École Polytechnique in Palaiseau, France, spent time experimenting with lasers on…

Scientists guide lightning bolts with laser beams for first time

Lightning rods have been used to guide lightning strikes for centuries, but now scientists have demonstrated something a bit more advanced than a humble metal stick. Beaming a high-powered laser into the sky was shown to deflect lightning bolts, which could lead to laser lightning rods that protect a wider area from dangerous strikes.Lightning is one of the most energetic natural events, unleashing millions of volts in fractions of a second. That of course can be destructive, damaging buildings, cutting power, starting…

Playing Zeus, scientists use a laser beam to control lightning bolts | Science

A bit like Zeus flinging thunderbolts, physicists working on a mountaintop in Switzerland have used a high-powered laser to steer lightning. The advance could open the way to use lasers to protect airports, rocket launchpads, and other sensitive infrastructure, researchers say. Still, it remains unclear whether the million-dollar technology works any better than a relatively cheap lightning rod. “It is inspiring,” says Matteo Clerici, a physicist at the…

New York City buying more than 900 EVs for government fleets

New York said it will replace more than 900 city-owned fossil-fuel vehicles with electric models and install 315 additional EV charging ports after receiving a $10.1 million US Transportation Department grant. The announcement is the latest by a US government agency to speed the shift away from gas-powered vehicles to EVs. New York City currently has more than 4,000 government-owned electric vehicles, and by later this year, close to 20 percent of city vehicles will be EVs. The new funding will help New York acquire 382…
