The city of Brighton is about to get a little greener. This week, the Brighton City Council voted 7-2 to allow recreational marijuana shops for the first time. The council-approved ordinance allows for the establishment of four stores, with two of the licenses reserved for social equity applicants. Applications open March 1. This will be the first time Brighton, which is located primarily in Adams County, has ever allowed cannabis businesses within city limits, despite the fact that recreational weed has been legal in…

Tri-State ordered to provide payout fees to members looking to leave

A federal agency has issued an order in the ongoing faceoffs between the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and its members in Colorado and three other states, clearing the way for a potential reshaping of a significant chunk of the region’s energy landscape. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission adopted a formula for showing electric cooperatives what it would cost them to end their contracts with the wholesale power provider. The parties are poring over this week’s 247-page order and crunching numbers.…

Killing Thatcher by Rory Carroll review – meticulous account of the Brighton bombing | Politics books

At 2.54am on 12 October 1984, a bomb, which had been concealed in room 629 of the Grand hotel in Brighton several weeks earlier, detonated with such force that it toppled one of the hotel’s five-ton Victorian chimney stacks. “Like a monstrous guillotine, it sliced through concrete, steel and wood, all the way to the ground floor,” writes Rory Carroll in Killing Thatcher, his meticulously rendered account of the IRA’s most audacious terrorist operation.Just two minutes before the bomb went off, its primary target, Margaret…

Killing Thatcher by Rory Carroll review – death in Brighton | IRA

“Today we were unlucky, but remember we have only to be lucky once, you will have to be lucky always.” The IRA’s statement after its bomb exploded in a bathroom on the sixth floor of the Grand Hotel, Brighton, in October 1984, was cleverly sinister but, with its repeated emphasis on luck, oddly airy. It took responsibility off the shoulders of the killers and placed it on those of Dame Fortune. This way of framing the horror that descended in the middle of the night during the Tory party conference was cruelly dismissive…

Brighton’s City Council made a major move on Tuesday night toward bringing a gigantic lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant to Colorado, approving a package of economic incentives for Amprius Technologies to stand up a 775,000-square-foot factory on East Bromley Lane. The facility would dwarf the size of the next biggest battery plant in the state — Louisville-based Solid Power’s 75,000-square-foot facility in Thornton — by a factor of more than 10. It would open no later than mid-2024, according to a City Council memo.…
