These Tiny Creatures Become Cannibals After Sex Turns Deadly : ScienceAlert

If you are exploring our beautiful Australian wilderness this year, keep an eye out for animals behaving in interesting ways. You never know what you might see, as our research team discovered. In 2023, our colleague from Sunshine Coast Council, Elliot Bowerman, took a two-night trip to New England National Park – its 1,500 meter-high mountain peaks are some of the loftiest on Australia's mid-east coast. On the afternoon of 17 August, Elliot trekked the path to Point Lookout. While inspecting some plants on the trail, he…

Cannibals! Crying! Carrots! The best movie moments of 2022 | Film

The outburst – We’re All Going to the World’s Fair Photograph: Everett Collection Inc/AlamyJane Schoenbrun’s breakout horror film We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is about a lot of things: transgender gender dysphoria, the process of coming out, how the internet mediates teen identity development, parasocial relationships, and the strange culture of folklore, dares and sharing that has built up on the social web.The glue that holds it all together is Anna Cobb’s amazing performance as Casey, a lonely teen trying to…

What Makes Animals Cannibals? – Scientific American

From amoebas engulfing one another to polar bears eating cubs, cannibalism is all over the natural world. But it’s a risky way to get food. Animals of the same species tend to have similar natural defenses and can easily share diseases. And eating one’s own offspring typically undermines genetic success. So what pushes some animals over the edge? “Almost all predators express cannibalism when conditions get grim enough,” says Jay Rosenheim, an entomologist at the University of California, Davis. Some desperate herbivores…

Bones and All review – an elegant lovers-on-the-run road movie, with cannibals | Horror films

Strip the flesh from the bones of the latest film by Luca Guadagnino and the skeletal story framework is a familiar one: it’s an outlaw lovers road movie, sharing DNA with dustbowl odysseys such as Badlands and Bonnie and Clyde. The backdrop for Bones and All is the 1980s, but it echoes the poor-eat-poor urgency of those other pictures, the poetic desperation of beautiful, rootless drifters taking what they need to survive. What sets this film apart, however, is the fact Maren (a magnetic Taylor Russell) and Lee (Timothée…

Only human: why is cinema so hungry for cannibals? | Film

We’ve had our fill of teenage vampires. We’ve had teenage werewolves, teenage witches, teenage zombies, telekinetic teenagers, countless teenage serial killers and even a possessed teenage hand. In recent years, though, we’ve been introduced to the teenage cannibal – whose arrival culminates with Bones and All, a nicely poignant film about adolescence, belonging and the compulsion to eat human flesh. The idea of fusing the coming-of-age movie with the grisly subgenre of cannibal-horror might sound outlandish on the face of…

Britain’s oldest human genomes reveal cannibals and hunter-gatherers

Scientists have sequenced the genomes of two ancient skeletons, and found they constitute the oldest human DNA in the British isles. The data reveals the story of two separate migrations of early humans into what is now the UK, and how these different cultures lived. One of the skeletons was found in Gough’s Cave in Somerset, while the other was a person who lived in Kendrick’s Cave in North Wales. They were both thought to date back to the end of the Paleolithic period, between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. By that point,…

Captivity Can Turn Fish Into Cannibals

Cannibalism was widely thought to be common in nature, however, recent research suggests differently.According to recent research, wild fish cannibalism is uncommon.Even though mosquitofish and guppies are known to be cannibalistic in captivity, it is very improbable that they would engage in cannibalism in the wild. Instead, the few instances of cannibalism in these fish are probably the result of an intense struggle for food. The results of a recent study led by researchers from the United States and the United Kingdom…
