Celestial surprise: Edmonton man discovers meteorite in his rain gutter

Doug Olson heard a loud thud on his roof while folding laundry in October last year. When he went out to investigate the cause of the sound, he didn't find anything out of the ordinary. But earlier this spring, while cleaning out his rain gutters on the roof of his Mill Woods home, Olson discovered a small grey and black rock. Turns out, the rock is a meteorite from space. "I was thinking, 'jeez how come I couldn't find it back when I was looking the first time?'" Olson said on Friday. Named the Menisa, the discovery…

The US developing asteroids as a strike weapon, says expert; check out this ‘celestial weapon’

Asteroids have fascinated humankind ever since they were first noticed. Thereafter, asteroid tales of destruction and the killing off of the dinosaurs, added a terrifying link too. Now, a Russian expert says that the US might be planning a celestial attack on Russia by using an asteroid as a weapon. On International Asteroid Day, Anatoly Zaitsev, honorary member of the Tsiolkovsky Cosmonautics Academy, and CEO of the Planetary Protection Center non-profit partnership in an interview stated that “The United States and…

Check timings, where, how you can watch celestial event

July Supermoon tonight: Check timings, where, how you can watch celestial event | Photo: Pixabay (Image for representation)The spectacular "Supermoon" that will be dazzling the night skies is a rare celestial show that skygazers and astronomers are all ready to see. About 22,531 kilometres nearer to Earth than normal will be the event for the Supermoon in July. The "lunar display," which occurs when the lunar sphere is at its nearest proximity to Earth in its orbit, is a natural occurrence. It makes the Moon…

Celestial Monsters and the Origins of Globular Clusters

Scientists have found strong evidence that supermassive stars existed within globular clusters when they formed 13 billion years ago. Here, an image of the globular cluster M13, 22 000 light years from Earth, consisting of a million stars squeezed into a space 150 light-years across. Credit: HST STScI NASA ESAResearchers from the universities of Geneva, Paris, and Barcelona have uncovered strong evidence that the peculiarities seen in sizable star clusters can be explained by supermassive stars.Globular clusters are the…

See Mars, Venus, and the Moon in a celestial gathering this week

Skywatchers will be able to look up at the sky this week, starting on Monday, June 19, and catch a glimpse of a celestial gathering as Venus, Mars, and the Moon come together near each other. It’s sure to be a beautiful sight, especially if you’re able to get out in a dark area to experience its full depth. This particular June celestial gathering is expected to be visible on June 21, this coming Wednesday. To spot the gathering, simply find the crescent moon in the sky and then grab a pair of binoculars and…

We May’ve Detected A Rare ‘Missing Link’ Black Hole in Our Own Celestial Backyard : ScienceAlert

At the heart of a glob of stars drifting through the Milky Way lurks a beast.Located some 6,000 light-years away, a globular cluster known as Messier 4 appears to be clumped around a black hole some 800 times the mass of our Sun.That's no featherweight, but it's far from a colossus either. In fact, the object falls into an intermediate mass range rarely seen, between smaller black holes and supermassive chonkers. So far, our only detections of these in-between black holes have mostly been indirect and inconclusive, and…

Webb telescope spots evidence of ‘celestial monster’ stars that burn brighter than a million suns

James Webb has peered deep into our universe and uncovered evidence of “celestial monster” stars, the universe’s biggest stars. The astronomers behind the discovery say that these monster stars are brighter than millions of Suns in the early universe. The scientists also say that the largest celestial monsters among them have a mass 300 times that of our Sun. These supermassive stars are described in a new study. The largest star discovered is believed to have a mass of 5,000 to 10,000 Suns. The existence of…
