Ivermectin — once touted as a Covid treatment by conservatives — doesn’t improve recovery much, clinical trial finds

Ivermectin, a drug once touted by conservatives as a treatment for Covid, does not meaningfully improve the recovery time for people with mild to moderate Covid-19, according a large clinical trial published in a peer-reviewed journal.People who took ivermectin recovered from Covid in 12 days while people who didn't take the drug recovered in 13 days, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Friday. Ivermectin has been approved to treat parasitic worms in humans, but it's…

Apple Watch detects pregnancy before clinical test: Report

Image Source : APPLE Apple Watch An Apple Watch has reportedly been credited with spotting a woman's pregnancy before she was even aware of it. According to a 34-year-old woman on Reddit, the watch indicated that her average resting heart rate had significantly increased in just a few days, which made her suspect that something was off. "Usually, my resting heart rate…

AI and data fuel innovation in clinical trials and beyond

Laurel: So mentioning the pandemic, it really has shown us how critical and fraught the race is to provide new treatments and vaccines to patients. Could you explain what evidence generation is and then how it fits into drug development? Arnaub: Sure. So as a concept, generating evidence in drug development is nothing new. It’s the art of putting together data and analyses that successfully demonstrate the safety and the efficacy and the value of your product to a bunch of different stakeholders, regulators, payers,…

“Shock absorber for the knee” implant shows promise in clinical trial

Treatments for osteoarthritis-related knee pain range from store-bought medication all the way up to total knee joint replacement. The recently trialled Misha Knee System is intended to help fill the gap between those extremes, by acting as an implanted shock absorber.Manufactured by California-based company Moximed, the Misha device looks not unlike a miniature version of the type of shock you might see on a car. Anchored to the inner sides of the femur and tibia bones alongside the knee joint, it incorporates a steel…

Bizarre new clinical trial will make patients grow tiny livers inside their bodies

Scientists will soon begin a clinical trial for a new liver disease treatment. The experimental treatment will hopefully help treat end-stage liver disease and reduce liver transplants. To do this, it will harness the natural regenerative power of the liver by growing an entirely new liver within the patient. It won’t just rely on one new liver, either. Instead, patients will grow multiple tiny livers in their bodies. Clinical trials for a new end-stage liver disease treatment will start soon Image source:…

Clinical trial will have patients grow multiple mini-livers internally

A new experimental treatment could help treat end-stage liver disease – by growing tiny new livers elsewhere in the patient’s bodies. The technique, pioneered by cell therapy company LyGenesis, is due to begin human clinical trials in the next few weeks. The liver has a powerful regenerative capacity, able to repair itself from the constant damage it sustains as it works to rid the body of toxins. But alcohol intake or an unhealthy diet can impair that ability and lead to liver disease, the end stages of which can require…

ETL in clinical data science

An overview of ETL in healthcare, a critical part of the data lifecycle in clinical data scienceThis is the second article in my clinical data science series. In the first article, I provided a thorough overview of the expansive field of clinical data science, and that sets the foundation upon which this edition is built. If you are unfamiliar with the area of clinical data science or you just want a fast refresher on the key ideas, you might want to have a sneak peek of the introductory article. With that said, the rest…

Clinical Trial Restored Sight to 20 People With Corneas Made From An Unlikely Source : ScienceAlert

Implants made from pig skin have restored sight to 20 people with diseased corneas, in an exciting pilot clinical trial. Many of the patients were blind before receiving the help of this bioengineered tissue.Incredibly, after two years, all 14 of those blind people had their vision restored and three of them, and three of them now have perfect 20/20 vision."This gets us around the problem of shortage of donated corneal tissue and access to other treatments for eye diseases," says Linköping University ophthalmology…

First Volunteers Set to Get Experimental Lyme Disease Vaccine in Large Clinical Trial

Image: Shutterstock (Shutterstock)A large-scale trial for a crucially needed vaccine has just gotten underway. Over the weekend, the first volunteers enrolled in the trial testing out a Lyme disease vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer and Valneva. Researchers hope that the multi-dose shot will protect kids and adults against six strains of the bacteria that cause Lyme in both the U.S. and Europe. The candidate is code-named VLA15. Typically, vaccines train the immune system to recognize a germ,or some important part of
