The world is building solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other crucial climate technologies faster than ever. As the pace picks up, though, a challenge is looming: we need a whole lot of materials to build it all. From cement and steel to nickel and lithium, the ingredient list for the clean energy transition is a long one. And in some cases, getting our…

This town’s mining battle reveals the contentious path to a cleaner future

It was these rich reserves that drew Talon, which was previously focused on developing gold mines in Brazil, to this part of rural Minnesota. After reviewing the findings of Kennecott Exploration, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto that had been drilling at the site for more than a decade, it agreed to acquire a 30% stake for $37.5 million in 2014. Talon now owns 51% of the project.  The density of the nickel, copper, and iron at the site means that Talon can extract more metals from every ton of ore it pulls up from the ground.…

James Gunn Comes to the Rescue After ‘The Marvels’ Mayhem as ‘Fantastic Four’ Flirts With Its Most Contentious Casting Yet

The Marvels doesn’t have much going for it, unfortunately, what with its disastrous box office gross so far, but at least it had that epic post-credits scene teasing the return of an X-Men favorite. Unfortunately, its USP has been swiped by DC chief James Gunn for his new Superman reboot. Elsewhere, the casting conversation surrounding Marvel’s Fantastic Four is getting weirder by the day as we may be on the brink of the unexpected gender-flipping of an iconic character. But don’t remind The Marvels haters, because they…

‘Indiana Jones 5’ Director Addresses the Hugely Contentious Final Act

Image via Lucasfilm Based on the current box office projections, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is not going to be soaring like an eagle at the box office this weekend, but there’s a lot of people out there who think the final act of the iconic adventurer’s fifth and final outing jumped clean over the shark. It’s easy to understand why, but it also seemingly forgets what happened in the previous four movies where Harrison Ford’s title hero was forced to deal with face-melting supernatural MacGuffins,…

History Repeats Itself as Disney’s String of Box Office Busts Have All Eyes on a Contentious MCU Sequel to Save the Day

Image via Marvel Studios The state of Disney’s box office health is currently under a microscope now that Elemental has added its name to the growing number of movies losing the company money instead of making it some. As a result, an upcoming MCU sequel a portion of the fandom will undoubtedly hate has been deemed the company’s box office savior. If it can match its predecessor, it’ll be fine, but the MCU’s recent slate of films has resulted in cautious optimism.   Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Dial of…

The case is part of a sprawling intellectual property dispute between the former business partners that includes other lawsuits in the US, Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is Officially Worse than A Highly Contentious MCU Threequel

Image via Marvel Studios It’s 2013, Marvel Studios has just released the conclusion to a beloved MCU trilogy that is proving much more controversial than hoped for… It’s 2023, and the same thing is happening again. Fans would be forgiven for feeling like Doctor Manhattan right now (yes, that’s a DC reference in a Marvel-themed story — what? James Gunn wouldn’t mind) as the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is turning out to be eerily reminiscent of another MCU threequel that premiered a decade ago.…

OTTAWA—Canadian legislation to compel digital platforms such as Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube and Bytedance Ltd.’s TikTok, along with streaming services like Netflix Inc., to prominently showcase Canadian programming to users in this country received final parliamentary approval on Thursday. This clears the way for Canada’s Liberal government to begin implementing one of the most ambitious pieces of developed-world regulation in the digital field, a task that analysts and former officials say could take…
