X reinstates policy against misgendering & deadnaming

X is again making it illegal for users to misgender and deadname other users on the platform. The policy was dropped last year, but X is reinstating it again following numerous criticisms. As Ars Technica reports, in April last year, X (called Twitter back then) updated its abuse and harassment policy to allow for misgendering and deadnaming. The policy was adopted in the pre-Musk era in 2018. But the billionaire later suggested that his tweets might violate the policy. Meanwhile, the latest update to X’s policy in…

X revives policy targeting deadnaming, misgendering

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, updated its abuse and harassment rules to revive regulations around content that misgenders or deadnames individuals.   The quiet update comes less than a year after the platform, under Musk’s ownership, revoked its ban on content that uses a transgender person’s name before they transitioned — known as a deadname — or purposefully used the wrong gender for someone.  The update to X’s abuse and harassment rules was first reported by Ars Technica. The updated…

Twitter quietly reversed its policies to allow for intentional deadnaming and misgendering

Twitter has, once again, quietly updated a significant policy without explanation. The company appears to have changed its hateful conduct policy to remove a section that protected transgender people from misgendering and deadnaming, in a move spotted by GLAAD. Twitter had originally banned targeted deadnaming and misgendering in 2018. “We prohibit targeting others with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category,” the policy…

Trans Researchers Want Google Scholar to Stop Deadnaming Them

Picking her new name led Tess Tanenbaum to ponder many questions. Am I Josie or a Hanna? Should it sound similar to her previous masculine name? What will it look like as a signature? She began to walk around with a shortlist in her pocket. Ultimately she picked Theresa Jean, or Tess, because it made her full name sound like a pulp detective character or a superhero, and is reminiscent of her daughter’s middle name, Tesla. On July 4, 2019, Tess came out as transgender—her own independence day.But burying her old name…
