Deaths From Fungal Infections Have Doubled Worldwide in Just a Decade : ScienceAlert

Eleven years ago, my colleagues and I estimated that about 2 million people around the world were dying from fungal infections annually. My latest estimate puts the figure today at nearly double that: around 3.8 million deaths. To put this in perspective, it accounts for around 6.8% of total global deaths. Coronary heart disease is probably responsible for 16% of the world's total deaths, followed by stroke at 11%. Smoke-related lung disease (COPD) comprises 6% of total deaths, with fungal infection being responsible for…

Neighbors and teen arrested in deaths in Central Valley

When police officers went to a house on South Church Avenue in Reedley, Calif., on Saturday morning to make a welfare check, they were not prepared for the scene that greeted them when they entered. Police officers painstakingly dug up the ground with their hands and found a third body in a…

Lawsuit against Snap over fentanyl deaths can proceed, judge rules

A lawsuit blaming Snapchat for a series of drug overdoses among young people can proceed, a Los Angeles judge ruled this week. A group of family members related to children and teens who overdosed on fentanyl sued Snapchat maker Snap last year, accusing the social media company of facilitating illicit drug deals involving fentanyl, a synthetic opioid many times deadlier than heroin. Fentanyl, which is cheap to produce and often sold disguised as other substances, can prove lethal in quantities as small as a 2…

While he's technically not an alien, Hyperion is his world's last Eternal and was sent to Earth on a ship similar to Kal-El's in the moments before his planet is destroyed. Can a pill prevent deaths from venomous snake bites?

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. —  John Heenan knows the terror of feeling a sting on his foot, then looking down and seeing two bright red puncture wounds about an inch apart and a massive rattlesnake slithering away into tall grass. It was a summer morning in 2017, and the 74-year-old horticulturist was carrying a box of fruit in a Marin County orchard when, he said, “I stepped right on him, then called out to a partner, ‘Hey, I’ve been bitten by a rattlesnake.’”It’s a snapshot imprinted in Heenan’s brain. “The fangs struck a…
