China’s New Dark Matter Lab Is Biggest and Deepest Yet

Some 2,400 metres below the Jinping Mountains in southwest China, the world’s deepest and largest underground laboratory has just opened. The enormous space is home to scientists who are hunting down dark matter — the hypothetical substance that is thought to make up more than 80% of the mass in the Universe. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) opened in 2010 and, after three years of construction, its second phase, CJPL-II, became operational in December 2023. With a sprawling capacity of 330,000 cubic metres,…

All of Us Strangers: loneliness is our deepest shame – can cinema help us confront it?

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse LoughreyGet our The Life Cinematic email for freeOlivia Laing wrote the book on loneliness. Over a decade ago, the British writer moved to New York City for the love of a man who then called it off. She stayed and sought out artists who anchored her solitude to the city. “I was possessed with a desire to find correlates,” she wrote in 2016’s The Lonely City, “physical evidence that other people had inhabited my state”. The book was…

Is Gravity Quantum? New Experiment To Probe Universe’s Deepest Mystery

Scientists from several universities are collaborating on an experiment named ‘MAST-QG’ to determine if gravity has quantum properties. The experiment, which involves levitating microdiamonds in quantum superposition, aims to unite general relativity and quantum mechanics. Despite its complexity, this research could fundamentally alter our understanding of gravity and has broad implications for physics. This is NASA’s deepest 3D fly-through of our universe ever

NASA has revealed one of the deepest 3D fly-throughs of our universe ever created. The new visualization was created using data captured by the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS). This particular part of the survey highlighted a very small part of the Extended Groth Strip, which is a region between the Ursa Major and Boötes constellations. Tech. Entertainment. Science. ‘Every writer’s deepest fear’: what happened when I gave a book talk completely nude | Books

‘So Nell, tell us a bit about how you became a writer …” I look down and see that, despite my legs being crossed, a significant amount of pubic hair is visible to the audience in front of me. I can feel my nipple brush against my wrist as I lean one arm over the back of my chair. The rolls of my stomach are stacked, completely visible to the whole tent, including the man with the microphone.I am in a nightmare. An anxiety dream. I am living out every writer’s deepest fear and giving a book talk, surrounded by strangers,…

The Deepest Breath review – stunning Netflix documentary on freediving | Documentary films

Should you find yourself falling behind on your summer fitness goals, you might find late-breaking inspiration in The Deepest Breath, which makes running a marathon look like a mosey through the park.Laura McGann’s stunning documentary is a love story embedded in the world of free diving, the deadly extreme sport whose practitioners plunge toward the ocean floor, often wearing nothing but a wetsuit and nose plug. (Goggles are out of the question since the air pressure would cause blood vessels in the eyes to burst.)The…

Euclid “Dark Universe” Space Telescope Lifts Off on Quest To Unravel Deepest Cosmic Mysteries

On July 1, 2023, the Euclid spacecraft, operated by the European Space Agency (ESA), was successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The spacecraft is aimed at exploring the mysterious components of the Universe, dark matter and dark energy. ‘Am I still any good? Have I still got it?’: PJ Harvey on doubt, desire and deepest, darkest Dorset | PJ Harvey

Star power is a rare thing in music today, stripped away by social media overexposure and a heritage industry that trades on former glories. But PJ Harvey has an otherworldly air as she walks into a restaurant at the Barbican in London for one of her first interviews about her music in more than a decade. A thunderstorm has broken the June heatwave, and Harvey, 53, had to shelter under a ledge to keep dry on her way here. Still, Harvey looks pristine in a black vest and tiny black leather shorts, her famous dark hair in…

Unveiling the Deepest Hydrothermal Activity

Research from Waseda University has found that petit-spot volcanoes on the ocean floor contribute significantly to marine biogeochemical cycles, including the carbon cycle, due to their release of CO2 and methane-enriched alkaline magma. The study of a petit-spot volcano in the Japan Trench revealed it as the deepest known hydrothermal site, with iron and manganese oxides identified as evidence of hydrothermal activity. These findings highlight the need for further study of these underwater volcanoes.Researchers reveal…
