Giant Panda’s “Amazing” Feature Developed at Least Six Million Years Ago

An artist reconstruction of Ailurarctos from Shuitangba. The grasping function of its false thumb (shown in the right individual) has reached to the level of modern pandas, whereas the radial sesamoid may have protruded slightly more than its modern counterpart during walking (seen in the left individual). Board game developed by scientists is winning plaudits for inspiring students to consider STEM careers

Diamond: The Game. Credit: Diamond Light Source Ltd A team of scientists and a games specialist have designed "Diamond: The Game," a board game developed to give secondary school students a chance to explore a broad range of STEM scientific careers and subjects. This is achieved through firsthand experience of the different aspects of working in scientific research and life as a scientist and shows how research at a facility…

Artificial Photosynthesis Developed to Help Make Food Production More Energy-Efficient

Researchers have found a way to bypass the need for biological photosynthesis altogether and create food independent of sunlight by using artificial photosynthesis. The study was published in the journal, Nature Food.Researchers used a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, the form of the main component of vinegar. Food-producing organisms then consume acetate in the dark to grow.Combined with solar panels to generate the electricity to power the…

Mars Probe Running OS Developed in Windows 98 Receives Software Update in Space

The latest, but probably not the last, tale of old software running in mission-critical operations comes to us via the Twitter feed of guitar-playing Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. The European Space Agency’s Mars Express probe, currently in orbit around the Red Planet and doing just fine, recently had a major software update to increase its chances of discovering water there. How do you update Windows 98 on a spaceship orbiting Mars? @esa is doing it for Mars Express, after 19 years. https://t.co/DRWtuaqo22…

Indigenous Metal 3D Printer for Defence, Aerospace Applications Developed by IIT Jodhpur

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur, have indigenously developed a metal 3D printer for aerospace, defence and general engineering applications.According to officials, all the components of the metal 3D printer, except the laser and robot systems, are designed and manufactured in India. The project's main objective is to reduce the cost of metal 3D printers and attract a broader range of users, they said."Despite the fact that metal 3D printing technology started a few years after the launch of…

Harvard Scientists Have Developed a Revolutionary New Treatment for Diabetes

Researchers have recently successfully treated Type 1 diabetes by transplanting insulin-producing pancreas cells into the patient.University of Missouri scientists are partnering with Harvard and Georgia Tech to create a new diabetes treatment that involves transplanting insulin-producing pancreatic cellsType 1 diabetes is estimated to affect around 1.8 million Americans. Although type 1 diabetes often develops in childhood or adolescence, it can occur in adulthood.Despite active research, type 1 diabetes has no cure.…

Scientists Have Developed ‘Living’ Skin For Robots, And It’s Quite Something

From Talos, the giant bronze automaton who guarded the princess Europa in ancient Greek myths, to Cylons and Terminators, the idea of artificial humans has both fascinated and creeped us out for centuries.   Now, we're closer than ever to making a robot look remarkably like a human, with the development of living robot skin. This icky-looking substance is water repellent, self healing, and has a texture just like our own skin.Because it's actually made of human skin cells."I think living skin is the ultimate solution to…

IIT Madras to deploy robot developed to clean septic tanks in Tamil Nadu

A robot developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to help eliminate manual scavenging in India, is all set for field deployment, the institute said on Thursday.Ten units of the robot named 'HomoSEP' will be first deployed across Tamil Nadu, and later in Gujarat and Maharashtra."The septic tank is a poisonous environment, filled with semi-solid and semi-fluid human faecal material that make up about two-thirds of the tank. Hundreds of deaths are reported every year across India, due to manual scavenging…

Toyota and Woven Planet have developed a portable hydrogen cartridge

Toyota wants hydrogen to power entire cities in Japan. Its subsidiary Woven Planet broke ground last February on a "Woven City" near Susono, which will act as a futuristic testbed for all sorts of urban planning ideas and technologies, including an expanded use of hydrogen fuel throughout the area. Now, Toyota and Woven have presented a working prototype of a portable hydrogen cartridge that seeks to provide green energy for "a range of daily life activities in and outside of the home." The cartridges are cylinders, 400 mm…
