Dungeons & Dragons Historian Ben Riggs’ Open Letter to WOTC

Ben Riggs is a D&D historian and author of the book Slaying the Dragon: A Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons.Gillian Jacobs Reacting to Her D&D Character Sheet From Community | io9 InterviewDear Wizards of the Coast,Hi! I wrote a history of your company back when it was called TSR. I also teach 7th and 8th grade, so for the past 15 years, I have watched year after year as kids discover, and go ga-ga for, D&D. I’m writing this letter because I want you to succeed. Frankly, I think all true-hearted…

Lord of the Rings, DnD

Kate Welch, when introducing her Lord of the Rings-inspired game to an audience, says that she hopes she doesn’t disappoint any book purists–she’s going to be inventing some new canon tonight. Welch’s game—sponsored by Lost Odyssey and benefiting the charity Extra Life—takes place after the War of the Rings, and she takes some liberties, but this is a game about adventurers striving for home. It’s still very much Tolkien, even if some of the spells described during play aren’t anywhere in the books. Vox Machina is a Fan

BREAK!! Into the Gaming Shelf With an Homage to Classic JRPGs

There are so many incredible crowdfunding campaigns going on, I really can’t stand it. Games are so good, y’all. I’ve also got some new games, supplements and additions, and indie designers who are taking it upon themselves to break apart systems and find new, incredible, and transformative ways to play games. (Every Lancer fan should buy Legionnaire, for real.) But onto our featured game, a JRPG inspired TTRPG 10+ years in the making.New Weapons, Missions, Powers & Locations | The Legend of Vox MachinaFeatured Game:

A new tie-in novel will reveal all. What Song Would Matthew Modine Use to Escape Vecna? Paizo’s First Draft of Its Open RPG License is Done and Public

Image: PaizoJust as the weekend started, TTRPG company Paizo has published the first draft of its Open RPG Creative License (ORC).Go Behind the Scenes of Fantasy Classic Dragonslayer in This Special Edition Sneak PeekThis comes months after president Jim Butler said the company was looking into the matter when Wizards of the Coast was preparing to deauthorize its own ORC this past January. Though Wizards later backed down from those changes following weeks of controversy, Paizo remained committed to getting its ORC out

11 Things We Want to See in the Dungeons & Dragons Sequel

It remains to be seen if Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will be popular (and profitable) enough to warrant Hasbro and Paramount making a sequel. It would be a shame if it didn’t, however, as the movie was a blast that stayed nerdy while remaining comprehensible to mass audiences. So if there will be a sequel,…Read more... Watch the ’80s Dungeons & Dragons Crew Discover the New Movie

Screenshot: Paramount/Wizards of the CoastWe’ve already mentioned how cool it is that 1) the characters from the classic, goofy 1983 Dungeons & Dragons cartoon make a brief appearance in the new D&D movie Honor Among Thieves, and 2) it’s an Easter egg for fans that doesn’t distract or detract from the film’s storytelling. But now, the movie characters have come to the cartoon in this similarly goofy video.Go Behind the Scenes of Fantasy Classic Dragonslayer in This Special Edition Sneak PeekParamount has redubbed

Role-Playing and Tabletop News, Plus Kickstarters

I’m actually delighted to be featuring Gosu X—one of the few times board games to have made it onto this list (I’m simply not as plugged into what board games are coming out, I’m sorry everyone). Gosu X is a pre-build deck builder that encourages ever-increasing big swings as the game goes on. It’s a challenge, but very fun. We’ve also got some incredible new releases and crowdfunding campaigns, so search through the Game Shelf for your table’s new favorite game.Vox Machina is a Fan Forward ProjectGuns Blazing is a…
