Facebook Messenger Starts Testing Default End-To-End Encryption

Facebook has begun testing default end-to-end encryption (E2EE) on Messenger. Parent company Meta Thursday announced that the test begins this week with chats between a small group of users. It will be automatically enabled for the selected users. Any new messages or calls between the people of the test group will be end-to-end encrypted by default.Messenger has offered optional E2EE for some time now. It initially only covered one-to-one conversations but expanded the features to group chats earlier this year. However,…

Facebook Messenger finally tests default end-to-end encryption

Meta has announced it will be testing default end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger. The social media company said in a press release on Thursday that testing has already begun “between some people” earlier this week, and that it will be working to make the privacy feature default for all messages and calls in 2023. If you’re part of the test group, your frequent chats will be automatically end-to-end encrypted, thereby rendering end-to-end encryption non-optional. This means that any conversation between you…

Additionally, Meta launched a test of automatic end-to-end encrypted chat threads on Messenger and an expansion of other features. “Your message history is important, and end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations are currently stored on your device,” the Meta announcement explains. “With that in mind, we’re testing secure storage to back up those…

Meta Just Happens to Expand Messenger’s End-to-End Encryption

A Nebraska woman and her 17-year-old daughter are facing felony and misdemeanor charges related to allegedly performing an abortion after 20 weeks, which has long been illegal in the state, and concealing a fetus. Reports from the Lincoln Journal Star and Motherboard revealed this week that law enforcement collected evidence for the charges in part by soliciting data from Meta with a warrant that ordered the company to hand over records from the 17-year-old’s Messenger chat histories. While Meta was complying with a…

Meta starts testing default end-to-end encryption on Messenger

Meta has long been working on end-to-end encryption for its messaging products, but so far, only WhatsApp has switched on the privacy feature by default. In its latest update about its efforts, Meta said it will start testing default end-to-end encrypted chats for select users on Messenger. Those chosen to be part of the test will find that some of their most frequent chats have been automatically end-to-end encrypted. That means there's no reason to start "Secret Conversations" with those friends anymore.  The company is…

Facebook begins testing default end-to-end encryption on Messenger

Facebook has shared an update on its long-awaited plans to turn on end-to-end encryption (E2EE) by default in its Messenger chat platform, saying it has begun testing the feature for chats “between some people” this week. Facebook currently offers Messenger users the option to turn on E2EE on a per-chat basis, but such opt-in schemes are generally only embraced by a security-conscious minority. Making end-to-end encryption the default will be a big step: adding a substantial layer of security to a chat platform used by…

Post-Quantum SIKE Encryption Algorithm Broken by Single-Core PC

Photo: CHRIS DELMAS/AFP (Getty Images)It turns out that breaking an encryption algorithm meant to withstand the most powerful cyberattacks imaginable might not be as tough as we’d been led to believe. In a paper published over the weekend, researchers demonstrated that a PC with a single-core processor (weaker than a decent laptop) could break a “post-quantum” algorithm that had been a contender to be the gold standard for encryption in just one hour.Last month, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST,
