One fan spent three years saving a Final Fantasy game before it shut down

February 29th was the last day of service for Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, a mobile game based on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy fighting game series. Since launching in the US in 2018, the game has amassed over 170 characters from across 30 years of Final Fantasy history, scattered throughout four acts composed of multiple chapters and side stories representing hundreds of hours of a game that can no longer be played. Though Opera Omnia is officially gone, one person has shouldered the task to ensure the game hasn’t…

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not only a fascinating retelling of one of gaming’s most beloved titles — it’s also among the most feature-rich games of this generation. From vast open areas to explore that teem with activities to densely populated cities and tense dungeons, there’s at least 100 hours worth of content to uncover here if you’ve got the time and energy to complete it all. As you work through the game, you’ll find that a surprising amount of this playtime sees you engaging with minigames, both to advance…

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shows the importance of great sidequests

Square Enix Among its many highlights, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth makes simple sidequests a lot more engaging than I had expected. Take an early-game sidequest called When Words Won’t Do. On a surface level, it’s a simple escort mission where players must get a dog from Under Junon to Crow’s Nest unscathed. I did not initially have high hopes for this sidequest due to the poor reputation of escort missions; thankfully, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth defied that fate. To make this optional content more worthwhile, Square…

Oscars 2024: Final predictions for all 23 categories

While some categories are a lock, some have us on the edge of our seats. (Alex Rhodes / For The Times) Did Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” have the best picture Oscar in the bag when it opened in theaters last July? All the necessary building blocks were in place. Ecstatic reviews? Almost unanimous! Packed theaters? Yes! To the eventual tune of nearly $1 billion worldwide. A Great Man biopic (emphasis on Man ... the academy is still a bit of a boys’ club)? Three hours’ worth ... but also one that…
