John Francis Flynn: Look Over the Wall, See the Sky review – a blast of the past | Folk music

A traditional singer and stalwart of Dublin’s pub scene, John Francis Flynn released his 2021 debut, I Would Not Live Always, to something like critical delirium. Its vision was jarring, its balladry set to arrangements entwining guitar, fiddle and the like with synth and tape loops, displacing old songs to new times while keeping Flynn’s rich, sonorous vocals at its heart. On this second album he again produces in tandem with Brendan Jenkinson, and the multi-instrumental pair push boundaries unsparingly. Songs emerge…

‘People’s idea of Irishness is so warped’: John Francis Flynn, the folk singer fighting for Dublin’s spirit | Folk music

In August 2016, John Francis Flynn was booked for a lucrative residency on a Disney cruise ship, performing with a band at an imitation Irish pub themed on the leprechaun-heavy 1959 film Darby O’Gill and the Little People. “You’d be down getting breakfast next to some fella dressed as Goofy. It was really quite torturous,” he laughs.Later, when the promoters suggested the band dress as the film’s characters and play songs like Ed Sheeran’s much-mocked version of Galway Girl, the band turned down the offer to return.…

Johnny Flynn and Robert Macfarlane: The Moon Also Rises review – celebratory and thought-provoking | Folk music

The sunny positivity of the first collaboration between singer-songwriter-actor Johnny Flynn and nature writer Robert Macfarlane, 2021’s Lost in the Cedar Wood, felt like a genuine bright spot amid the bleakness of the pandemic. The genesis of this follow-up was far more pleasant – some of the songs came into being during walks on the South Downs (most notably Song With No Name), rather than as a result of exchanged WhatsApp messages and voice memos during lockdown – but the elements that made that first record so…

Researchers Blasted Ancient Egyptian Lizard Coffins With Neutrons

Six animal coffins from Egypt—impressively still sealed after about 2,500 years—have been opened virtually by a team of researchers using a unique imaging technology. The coffins contained lizard remains, the scientists found, as well as textiles that may have once wrapped the small bodies and lead, which may have had magical connotations. The coffins’ insides were revealed using neutron tomography after several failed attempts to see inside the coffins with X-ray imaging. The team’s research is published today in…

The Score review – Johnny Flynn and Will Poulter do gangland musical comedy | Film

If nothing else, this shaggy-dog crime comedy-musical wins points for originality. It’s almost certainly the first British crime film to swap oi-shut-it geezerish banter for songs. Though to be fair, the characters here don’t break into showtunes but baleful ballads of existential rawness written by actor-musician Johnny Flynn. He also co-stars as Mike, one of two amateurish criminals on their way (20 grand in the car boot) to pull off a deal with bigtime crooks – the “score” of the title. Flynn’s Mike is the boss; Will…

‘Rhythm is a thing that defines us’: Johnny Flynn on his career as actor and musician | Johnny Flynn

Like most of us, the current turmoil in British politics has seen Johnny Flynn – actor, folk musician, the kind of multi-hyphenate who plays the hurdy-gurdy – spend the past few weeks doom-scrolling and current-affairs-obsessing. Flynn is a multitasker. He is obsessed with news anchors and reporters and follows many of them on Twitter, noting, with alarm, how they think social media is the most important thing in the world. He now wakes up each morning with such genuinely worrying thoughts as: I wonder what Jacob…
