See the First Images From Japan’s X-Ray Space Telescope

The Japanese space agency JAXA has released the first test images from its X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM). The images show a galaxy cluster and a supernova remnant, and offer insight into the chemical cocktail that composes the supernova. Will You Click Windows’ New Copilot Button? An X-ray telescope functions similarly to the X-ray Specs of your favorite comic books: they reveal aspects of the cosmos that would otherwise be invisible, enabling astronomers to peer at the undercarriage of the cosmos.XRISM…

Webb Spots Ancient Supernova in a Gravitational Lens

Last month, astronomers focused the Webb Space Telescope on the galaxy MRG-M0138 and found something surprising: a supernova in the ancient universe, magnified for your viewing pleasure by the gravitational lensed galaxy.First Full-Color Images From Webb Space TelescopeWhen stars die, they release a huge amount of energy, which astronomers can observe as a bright light source called a supernova. The supernova imaged by Webb is the second spotted in the lensed region. Named Encore, the supernova was “discovered…

The Best Space Images of 2023

Space is an inky black yonder... but for the countless light sources that pepper the billions of light-years that human instruments can see. Thanks to ground-based telescopes and observatories parked millions of miles from Earth, 2023 has been a terrific year for space imagery. Astronomers captured fascinating new…Read more... Death plunge of galaxies and the longest known tail revealed by NASA

Change is a constant and that happens on the tiny scale of a human being to those of the biggest galaxies in the world. Now, NASA has detected a group of galaxies plunging into the Coma galaxy cluster, but the significant part is that it is leaving behind the longest known tail of superheated gas behind a galaxy group ever found.NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory snapped the galaxy group NGC 4839. First, know what a galaxy group is as opposed to galaxy cluster. Galaxy groups are collections of about 50 galaxies or less and…

NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day 16 February 2023: Hydra galaxy cluster

Most galaxies exist in groups or clusters with dozens or hundreds of members, and these cluster galaxies are all in constant motion, pulled and twisted by their neighbour's gravity. One such galaxy cluster is the Hydra Cluster of galaxies which is one of the three large galaxy clusters within 200 million light-years of the Milky Way. Galaxy clusters are the largest objects in the Universe bound by gravity and astronomers can use them to measure important cosmological properties, according to NASA.NASA's Astronomy

Webb Telescope Uses Gravitational Lensing to Scrutinize Pandora’s Cluster

A new Webb Space Telescope deep field image shows the luminous realm of Pandora’s Cluster (Abell 2744), a pileup of galaxy clusters that formed over the course of 350 million years. The cluster has previously been imaged by a number of telescopes, including NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. But now the $10 billion Webb telescope has trained its gaze on the distant cluster, displaying about 50,000 light sources in and around the object. The image shown above is actually four Webb images
