The Unwritten Laws of Physics for Black Women

She decided to study physics. It was, in a way, good timing—a Black American woman had just become the first of her kind to earn a physics PhD, back in Greene-Johnson’s home state. At Stanford, Greene-Johnson was the only Black student in her major, but that didn't surprise her. What did was the presence of six Black PhD students in the department. “I had brothers and sisters galore,” she told me.Her adviser greeted her by saying, “I wanted the other one,” referring to one of the white women in her class. “But you’ll…

Research shows gender disparity in women escooter rentals

Many cities are partnering with escooter providers to get cars out of their landscapes. But should we get behind this type of transport when they are massively underutilized by women? Research in Paris, for instance, found that 66% of dockless e-scooter riders were male. This week, Voi released a report on Shared escooters and gender equity. It reveals a significant disparity in the way men and women experience escooters — with the latter losing out.  Written…

Understanding gender dysphoria in transgender teenagers

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain The teenage years are a tumultuous time in one's life, especially for transgender teens. On top of typical social, mental, physical and emotional changes, they might also experience gender dysphoria—the psychological distress caused by a mismatch between a person's assigned sex and gender identity. Also, unlike adults, transgender teenagers might not have access to treatments like surgery or…

The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial headed toward its conclusion on Friday as the dueling parties offered closing arguments after a seven-week trial that has gripped public attention and become something of a litmus test for the state of gender relations. The case will next head for deliberation by seven of 11 impaneled jurors selected for the trial in April. The legal team for Heard, the defendant in the case, told jurors to “think about the message that Mr Depp and his attorneys are sending to Amber and victims…

Gender discrimination lawsuit against PlayStation has been resubmitted

A gender discrimination lawsuit against PlayStation has been resubmitted with more evidence after being dismissed earlier this year. In November last year, Emma Majo originally submitted the suit, claiming that Sony Interactive Entertainment didn’t compensate female staff equally to male staff who did very similar jobs. The lawsuit alleged that Sony willfully violated the Equal Pay Act in the US. Majo filed a gender bias complaint to Sony in 2021, only to be terminated from the company “soon after”. In April, Sony…

Roe v. Wade’s Fall Could Threaten Birth Control and IVF Access

Within minutes of the leaking of the draft opinion from the US Supreme Court calling for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Elizabeth Constance, a reproductive endocrinologist at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, was inundated with messages on social media from concerned patients. What does this mean for the embryos I have frozen, they asked her. What does it mean for the egg retrieval I have planned? “Our patients are really afraid,” says Constance. Should Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case which…

The Post-Roe Battleground for Abortion Pills Will Be Your Mailbox

This spring, Missouri considered, but did not pass, a measure that would have criminalized out-of-state travel for an abortion, creating a bounty-hunter incentive similar to Texas’ new anti-abortion law to enforce it. Exercising “extraterritoriality,” or trying to enforce one state’s laws inside the jurisdiction of another state, would be a new frontier in abortion restriction, but in a post-Roe world, legal scholars can’t rule it out. In New York, which has declared itself a safe-harbor state for abortion, legislators…
