Gore Verbinski Returns to Movies with Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die

Image: Rochlin/FilmMagic (Getty Images)Once upon a time, Gore Verbinski was releasing movies at a reliable cadence, from Mouse Hunt and The Ring to the Pirates of the Carribean trilogy. Things took a turn in the 2010s with a pair of box office bombs: 2013's The Lone Ranger and 2016's A Cure for Wellness. He’s been in director purgatory since then, but a potential comeback may be on the horizon with his next film.Director Francis Lawrence on Making Netflix's BioShock FilmPer Deadline, Verbinski has rounded up a cast for

Classic Giallo The Psychic May Be Light on Gore, But It’s Got Plenty of Thrills

Italian horror master Lucio Fulci is best known for his gruesome Gates of Hell trilogy—especially The Beyond—and the immortal Zombi 2, but his career also contained excellently off-kilter giallo movies, including Don’t Torture a Duckling and The New York Ripper. The Psychic, coming soon to Shudder, has fewer of those lurid elements that became Fulci trademarks, but it’s a tightly wound thriller with just enough weirdness to remind you who was calling the shots.Rainn Wilson’s First Fandoms: Star Trek And D&DLike most…

Handling the Undead review – sad, slow-burn zombie drama is less gore, more grief | Sundance 2024

The dead are returning in the chilly Norwegian drama Handling the Undead, a sad, somber attempt to guide the zombie genre from midnight movie to arthouse. It works in parts, as a study of the ache and irrationality of grief, asking its characters how much they’re willing to accept and deny in order to see their loved ones again. But the first-time director Thea Hvistendahl’s patience-insisting slow burn can be testing, like watching a block of ice slowly melt, a story told in the smallest of drips, some of which sink in…

More gore please: don’t waste my time with blood-free monster movies | Film

Monster movie fans were thrilled when Ben Wheatley was confirmed as director of Meg 2: The Trench. The director of Kill List unleashed on a film in which Jason Statham battles giant prehistoric sharks? To quote the Sickos meme: “YES. .. HA HA HA ... YES!” The trailer looked promising. This could have been just what the fledgling franchise needed, especially as even Jon Turteltaub, director of the first Meg, had expressed disappointment at the first film’s lack of gore. “The number of really horrifying, disgusting and…

Eyes Guts Throat Bones by Moïra Fowley review – fairytale fun and gore | Fiction

Moïra Fowley is the well-regarded author of three Young Adult novels, best known of which is The Accident Season. Eyes Guts Throat Bones is her first venture into stories for adults, which came about when she abandoned writing a fourth YA novel during the pandemic to bring, in her own words, something “bloody and beautiful” screaming into the world in a “horror-adjacent” mode. The first story, What Would You Give for a Treat Like Me, is a strong opener: a vivid, neatly executed post-apocalyptic road story with fairytale…
