AMD might have a new graphics card next month, too

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends We weren’t expecting to hear much about AMD’s graphics cards in January, but a new rumor suggests we’ll see a new GPU in just a few weeks. AMD is prepping the RX 7600 XT, according to Benchlife’s sources (via VideoCardz). It’s apparently an updated version of AMD’s budget-focused RX 7600, sporting more VRAM and perhaps a better die. To understand the rumored card, we have to look at the RX 7600 we already have. It’s an 8GB graphics card based on the Navi 33 GPU. The card already maxes out…

Intel isn’t giving up on GPUs yet

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends Intel hasn’t said much about its graphics cards lately. We saw the launch of the Arc A770 and A750 late last year, and the A580 just a few months ago, but after the departure of Raja Koduri from Intel’s graphics division earlier this year, the future of Intel Arc has been a bit patchy. It now appears Intel is still planning to deliver on its road map, though. A slide shared with Japanese gaming outlet 4Gamer shows that Intel is planning to launch a next-gen GPU in 2024. This lines up with…

See the Best Science Graphics of 2023

Apple is quietly using AMD’s FSR for MetalFX graphics upscaling

Apple announced Metal 3, which is the company’s latest graphics framework, at WWDC 2022. It comes with MetalFX, which helps GPU offer better graphics performance. So far, people have been assuming that Apple has developed MetalFX in-house. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. According to a new report from NotebookCheck, MetalFX is based on the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology from AMD. The publication found the information in the Legal & Regulatory section of the software. AMD made FSR available…

Intel is cooking up an exciting DLSS 3 rival

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends Intel is working on a rival to Nvidia’s DLSS 3. Intel and researchers from the University of California published a paper detailing the tech, currently dubbed ExtraSS, at Siggraph Asia 2023 (spotted by Wccftech). It accomplishes the same goal as DLSS 3 by generating new frames to improve performance. Unlike DLSS 3, however, ExtraSS uses frame extrapolation, not frame interpolation. That latter method is how DLSS 3 (and AMD’s FSR 3) works. It takes two sequential frames and compares them…

GPUs are cheap right now, but don’t be tempted just yet

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends If you lived through the insanity that was the GPU shortage, you might be tempted by the current prices of graphics cards. Don’t be. We just got yet another sign that Nvidia might soon be launching the RTX 40 Super refresh, and with three new GPUs set to come out next month, there might be better options right around the corner that could adjust the entire GPU landscape in terms of pricing. There have been plenty of rumors about the upcoming RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and the RTX…

This was the most disappointing GPU I reviewed this year

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends I’m not mad, just disappointed. Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti has aged like milk, and it just released in May. The card was disappointing when it first released, hamstrung by a memory interface that held it back in games released this year. But it has grown even more stale over the course of the year as some of the best graphics cards, both from the last generation and the current one, have fallen in price. As with any graphics card, you can’t look at it in a vacuum. The RTX 4060 Ti is the most…

Graphics cards are selling again, and that worries me

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends GPUs are selling again. Ever since the GPU shortage, graphics cards haven’t been selling well, but a recent report from Jon Peddie Research shows that trend is changing. The report shows that GPU shipments increased by 16.8% compared to last quarter, which is a positive sign.  Still, I can’t help but feel worried about what this could mean for GPU prices. Both AMD and Nvidia came out of the pandemic highs with new ranges of graphics cards. Nvidia set the bar with pricing higher than we’ve…

The best (and worst) examples of Nvidia RTX in PC gaming

Nvidia just passed a huge milestone with RTX. The feature set is now available in over 500 games or apps, which is a massive accomplishment considering how big of a controversy the RTX platform was when Nvidia introduced it five years ago. We’ve come a long way since Battlefield V and Quake 2 RTX, so it’s a good chance to look back. There are over 500 games and apps with RTX features now, and that breaks down like this: 366 games with DLSS, 138 games with ray tracing, and 7 games with path tracing. In addition, there…
