Wendell & Wild review – Jordan Peele and Henry Selick craft a dark adventure | Toronto film festival 2022

We almost never see Black characters in stop-motion animation. You’d have to go all the way back to 1999’s The PJs – the short-lived crude sitcom about project housing produced by Eddie Murphy – for a memorable example. And that wasn’t even for kids. That’s what makes Wendell & Wild such a moment, an opportunity for younger audiences to see their communities re-imagined with the same stitched-together gothic aesthetic and hands-on care that director Henry Selick brought to The Nightmare Before Christmas and…

About Comics Putting Henry Leonard’s Dayenu Strips Back Into Print

| In the 1950s and 1960s, dozens of Jewish papers around the globe ran Dayenu, a single-panel gag comic series created by one Henry Leonard. That was just a poorly-protected nom de plume for the team of Rabbi Harry Rabin, who wrote the cartoons, and advertising and art director Leonard Pritikin, who drew them. These cartoons were popular enough to have a series of book collections published by New York's Crown Publishers, but those volumes have been out of print for about half a century. Now, by arrangement with Leonard…

Rising to the Surface by Lenny Henry review – the breakthrough years | Autobiography and memoir

When the comic and actor Lenny Henry attended the first writers’ meeting for his early-1980s sketch series Three of a Kind, he and his co-stars, David Copperfield and Tracey Ullman, were asked to speak about their vision for the show. Copperfield stood up and said he wanted it to be as funny as possible. Ullman said she didn’t want to play a sexy secretary, a nagging wife or any other female stereotypes that were a staple of the era. Henry, who had appeared on The Black and White Minstrel Show in the 70s, stated that he…

Rising to the Surface by Lenny Henry review – there’s nothing very funny about fame | Autobiography and memoir

Lenny Henry has always received more than his fair share of criticism, from racists, whose opinion can be discounted, but also from liberal activist types decrying the regressive buffoonery of his early work and comedy fans who simply find him unfunny. In his uneven second autobiography, following Who Am I, Again? which covered his early life up to 1980, Henry accepts most of this judgment.“I failed upwards,” he writes in a startling epilogue, citing the Beckett fragment on creative futility. He acknowledges that it took…

DC Fans Dream of a ‘World’s Finest’ Movie Starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck

Image via DC Warner Bros’ DCEU project seems destined to go down in history as a perfect example of incompetent studio management and missed opportunities. We won’t go into the notorious behind-the-scenes power struggles that ended up ruining the theatrical cut of Justice League, but it’s arguable the DCEU has never truly recovered. Now, fans on r/DC_Cinematic are fantasizing about a movie that could still theoretically be made but will almost certainly remain a pipe dream: Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck teaming…
