The HomePod and HomePod Mini are both receiving a rare discount

With most of the Apple news this week revolving around the new M3 MacBook Air and Apple’s ongoing app store kerfuffles in the EU, it’s not surprising that Best Buy’s current promos on the HomePod Mini and second-gen HomePod have slipped under the radar. That’s a shame, however, given the smart speakers are on sale for $79.99 ($20 off) and $269.99 ($30 off), respectively, which doesn’t happen often. If you’re deciding between Apple’s latest Siri-based smart speakers, there are a few things to consider. The latest HomePod is…

tvOS 17.4 and HomePod Software 17.4 now available

After a month of beta testing, Apple has released tvOS 17.4 and HomePod Software 17.4 to Apple TV and HomePod owners. Here’s what you need to know about this mild update. While the beta cycle of tvOS 17.4 was pretty mild, it was full of references for unreleased products and operating systems. With beta 1, the company added references to unreleased homeOS software. Most likely, this software could be used for a HomePod with a screen. Bloomberg and other outlets have reported on a HomePod with iPad integration,…

2025 at earliest, says rumor

After tvOS 17.4 hinted that a HomePod with a screen could have its release date revealed sooner, Bloomberg’s journalist Mark Gurman says this device won’t be released “until 2025 at the earliest,” meaning this upcoming operating system update for Apple TV only shows that Cupertino has something being cooked up for the long run.Gurman was the first to report that Apple was working on a HomePod with a screen, as the company has been planning to combine the Apple TV, FaceTime, and HomePod in one system. The…

Apple’s long-rumored ‘HomePod with a screen’ gets an update, but it’s not coming anytime soon

Apple's HomePod with an iPad-like screen attached is still in development, but it doesn't look like it's coming anytime soon. That's the latest from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, which says that Apple continues to work on new ways to combine its devices."There was a device that would combine the Apple TV, FaceTime and HomePod in one system, as well as a HomePod with a screen that swivels like a robotic arm", Gurman explains, also noting "Apple also has explored making iPad-like smart displays that…

The second-gen Apple HomePod is down to $285 in a rare sale

The latest Apple HomePod speaker is on sale for $285 at B&H Photo, which is $14 less than buying from Apple directly. This isn't the largest cash discount we've seen, and Apple previously bundled the device with a $50 gift card during Black Friday. But deals of any kind on the home speaker have been uncommon since it arrived in early 2023, so this modest drop still represents the lowest price we've seen in the last few months. The discount applies to both the black and white versions of the speaker.Photo by Billy

HomePod with a screen teased in tvOS 17 code, here’s what I want

The launch of a HomePod with a screen seems like a matter of time. This device has been rumored for over three years now since Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said Apple was exploring several different audio speaker models for the future. At the time, the journalist said Apple could be preparing an Apple TV with a HomePod combo, an iPad with a HomePod, or the three products combined. While it’s still unclear which product Apple wants to compete with (smart home hubs, Amazon Echo products, etc.), analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said…

Nuki’s new smart lock supports Thread so that you only need a HomePod or Apple TV to get it integrated into your HomeKit smart home —…

Building a smart home is a complicated affair. Some devices need to be hooked up directly to your existing HomeKit hubs, and then some need an extra hub to connect to those hubs. Some devices from the same manufacturer even need different hubs for different products to work and rely on different connection methods to hook it all up. It’s easy to see how complicated it can all get.Nuki, the smart lock manufacturer, just streamlined the process of getting one of its devices connected to your HomeKit setup — and it’s all…

HomePod with a built-in display leaked in tvOS 17.4 beta — is this the smart speaker update we’ve been waiting for?

There’s been speculation about a HomePod with a built-in display for a while now, and it looks like we could see the redesigned HomePod sooner rather than later.According to 9to5Mac, code in tvOS 17.4 beta 3 references a new device capable of running the software “Z314.” Apple TV and HomePod both run tvOS, despite the latter lacking a user interface. In the source code, the “Z314” is powered by an A15 Bionic chip, and the code reveals there are production versions of the product in testing. tvOS 17.4 beta 3 also adds…

The Most Disappointing Gadgets of 2023

Graphic: Vicky Leta / GO MediaWhile 2023 was a big year in consumer tech and had some clever innovations to show off, not everything was a smash hit, to say the least. Whether it was subpar performance, a troubled launch, or a glaring design flaw, these products disappointed us the most. This year’s picks, like the Apple iMac or the GoPro Hero 12, aren’t categorically terrible products, but they left us completely underwhelmed and wanting more. As you’ll see, failing to live up to the hype could be just as much a letdown
