How I put Linux on a Microsoft Surface Go – in just an hour

Configuring Surface Pen support in Ubuntu. Image: Simon BissonThe whole process, including compiling the camera drivers, took about an hour. Out the box Ubuntu 22.04 includes the LibreOffice suite, with Firefox as the default browser. I decided to install Microsoft's own Edge as an alternative, using it to host PWAs for Outlook, OneDrive, and Twitter, giving me a basic set of tools that should be enough if I want to throw a lightweight tablet into my backpack, just in case. There's even pen support, using a

Scientists restore vital cellular functions to pigs one hour after death

Scientists have demonstrated a new system that can restore crucial molecular and cellular functions in pigs one hour after death. Experiments showed that some tissue damage from loss of oxygen can be reversed, which could widen the organ transplantation pool and may even lead to new treatments for heart attacks. After the heart stops beating, the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to organs is interrupted, and within minutes cellular death and tissue damage begins that’s usually thought to be largely irreversible. As…

Spectacular Shock Wave From Rejected Star Hurtling Through Space at 100,000 Miles per Hour

Zeta Ophiuchi was once in close orbit with another star, before being ejected when this companion was destroyed in a supernova explosion. Infrared data from Spitzer reveal a spectacular shock wave that was formed by matter blowing away from the star’s surface and slamming into gas in its path. Data from Chandra show a bubble of X-ray emission located around the star, produced by gas that has been heated by the shock wave to tens of millions of degrees. The Chandra data help tell more of the story of this runaway star.…

This Runaway Star Is Zipping Through Space at Over 160,000 Kilometers Per Hour

Not all stars are happy to just hang around, orbiting the galactic center with all the other stars. Some stars go rogue, punted out across the Milky Way with significant force. These are the runaway stars, and we can trace their trajectories to understand violent events that can take place in the Universe.  One such star, and one of the more famous, is Zeta Ophiuchi. Located around 440 light-years from Earth in the equatorial constellation of Ophiuchus, it's also one of the oddest stars in the sky.Not only is it…

Redmi Note 11 Pro+ Teardown Video Released; Redmi Note 11 Series Cross 500,000 Sales Mark in 1 Hour

Redmi Note 11 Pro+ teardown video has been released by Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi just days after officially launching the new phone under its Redmi Note 11 series. The teardown coverage clearly shows the internals of the new Redmi Note-series phone, including its triple rear cameras as well as JBL speakers. The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ also has a dedicated liquid vapour cooling (VC) technology. In addition to the teardown, Redmi announced that in just one hour after beginning the sale for the Redmi Note 11 series, it was able to…

Four-Legged Robot Dog With Virtual Spinal Cord Learns to Walk in One Hour

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Germany have built a four-legged robot dog, which is capable of learning how to walk in an hour. The robot, Morti, is equipped with an artificial spinal cord that is continously optimised. The researchers were attempting to study how humans learn to walk from stumbling. When a baby of an animal is born, it has a muscle coordination network located in the spinal cord by birth but, it still takes time for the newborns to balance on their legs and…

COVID-19 Detection Within an Hour? This Device Makes It Possible, as Accurate as PCR Test

One of the biggest challenges at the beginning of the novel coronavirus pandemic was ensuring aggressive testing of vast populations in several countries across the world. With time, new testing techniques were developed to ease the process. And since the COVID-19 pandemic is very much still there, a team of engineers at MIT and Harvard University has designed a small device that can detect and report SARS-CoV-2 from a saliva sample within an hour. The study also demonstrates that the test is as accurate as a PCR test. The…

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 4 Recap: Captain America’s Darkest Hour

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 4 — out April 9 on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar — is essentially the decline (and potential end) of the new Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell). He slowly goes off the rails during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 4, first interrupting a mission and causing it veer off course, then standing up to Wakanda's Dora Milaje without realising what he is getting into, and ultimately killing a man in cold blood in full public view. It more than pays off on what Walker had…

Pulsar Discovered Blazing Through the Milky Way at Over a Million Mile per Hour

The G292.0+1.8 supernova remnant contains a pulsar moving at over a million miles per hour, as seen in the Chandra image along with an optical image from the Digitized Sky Survey. Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars that can form when massive stars run out of fuel, collapse, and explode. Sometimes these explosions produce a “kick,” which sent this pulsar racing through the remains of the supernova explosion. Additional images show a close-up look at this pulsar in X-rays from Chandra, which observed it both in 2006…
