Unhappy landings: please Avatar, don’t ever visit Earth! | Film

James Cameron et al seem to have turned round critical opinion on Avatar: The Way of Water at amazing speed, now that a few people have actually seen the movie. A few months back the sequel was being pilloried, now some people seem to think it’s going to be the greatest thing since the invention of mech-armour. But wait until they pull off their next cosmic trick. Yes, according to producer Jon Landau, the Na’vi are coming to Earth!“In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth,” Landau told io9. “And…

Footage of SpaceX’s amazing rocket landings never gets old

SpaceX first achieved the remarkable feat of landing its 70-foot-tall, first-stage Falcon 9 booster in December 2015. Since then, it’s nailed the landing procedure, whether it takes place on land or on a barge stationed out in the ocean. The landings enable SpaceX to reuse the boosters for multiple orbital missions, allowing for a more rapid launch cycle and significantly reduced flight costs. Watching one of SpaceX’s boosters come in to land is a sight to behold, its engines roaring back into life to steady itself…

Debris from NASA’s Mars landings is still creating little mysteries on the Red Planet

Mastcam-Z image shows the Dracon material found on Mars. Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASUAlthough the mystery of what the items were seemed to be solved, the question of how they got so far from the crash remained. NASA speculates that this could be a result of the energy from the crash ejecting the material into the air, the smaller pieces being expelled from the crash ballistically, or simply wind blowing the pieces away. There are no concerns with the debris at the time. However, the team will continue to log the

NASA Inks Deals for Moonwalking Suits for Artemis Landings

NASA has chosen Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to develop the next generation of spacesuits, designed to protect astronauts during spacewalks outside the International Space Station and strolls across the lunar surface during the Artemis landings.Neither of the two companies had any photos or renders to share, either, making it a surprisingly understated announcement.Nonetheless, it's a landmark decision marking the beginning of a years-long development phase, planned to culminate in its first demonstration missions…

US FAA Sets Rules for Some Boeing 787 Landings Near 5G Service

Federal safety officials are directing operators of some Boeing planes to adopt extra procedures when landing on wet or snowy runways near impending 5G service because, they say, interference from the wireless networks could mean that the planes need more room to land. The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that interference could delay systems like thrust reversers on Boeing 787s from kicking in, leaving only the brakes to slow the plane. That “could prevent an aircraft from stopping on the runway,” the FAA…
