Weekly Kusoge – Final Fantasy VII Demake

Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997 on PlayStation. In those days, the NES, despite Nintendo only discontinuing it in 1995, was considered practically ancient. Things aged faster in the ‘90s. By the time the PlayStation had passed into antiquity in the aughts, the denizens of Web 2.0 became aware of a Famicom/NES demake of Final Fantasy VII. Since Final Fantasy VII was still fondly remembered and the retro gamer identity was reaching its maturity, this was a fascinating topic of conversation. Just hearing about it…

Little Samson on NES asks how much you’ll pay for a gem

I have a number of valuable games in my collection. Some I acquired through lucky timing, others I’ve actually shelled out for, but all of them are the result of questionable priorities. None are as valuable as my copy of Little Samson. As of today, Little Samson is worth more than two months of rent for my small, one-bedroom apartment in a nowhere town. That’s really depressing because it both illustrates how ridiculous the collectors market is for video games and how ridiculously expensive it is just to afford a roof…

Ayaneo’s NES-inspired mini PC isn’t just a nostalgia hit

The mini PC is misunderstood. Easily dismissed as underpowered, over-priced or just plain ugly; we intuit that a computer with a tiny footprint has to mean a compromise. Ayaneo, best known for its gaming , has into with retro-inspired designs. Thankfully Ayaneo’s AM01 and AM02 mini PCs have more to offer, but their initial draw over rivals, I won’t lie, is nostalgic appeal.Sadly, I’m old enough to remember using the original Macintosh that inspired and if Nintendo ever reimagined a real NES, I hope it looks like .…

Adventures in Gameland looks promising, but its demo is lacking

Despite being at the proper age for it, I never caught on with Rugrats. I don’t think it really aired much with my cable provider. I do, however, know the NES quite well, and I can confirm Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is an NES game. This is despite the fact that the game will also have an HD art style over top of the 8-Bit backbone (not available on NES) that you can toggle on or off. Allegedly. That’s not actually in the demo. All you get is a taste for is the NES version, which strikes me as an odd decision. I…

Weekly Kusoge – American Gladiators

Between 1989 and ‘96 was the best time to be alive. We ate sugar for breakfast, groceries were affordable, and the internet as we know it today didn’t really exist. Mark my words, the world started going to shit after American Gladiators went off the air. The show almost feels like the embodiment of how excessive and unself-aware the time period was. Big ‘roided up guys and ladies in spandex with radical names battling the general public in colorful and ridiculous feats of strength. I barely remember it, and I still…

Jane Austen’s 8-bit Adventure is now available on an NES cartridge

Bitwise Reprise has announced that their 2023 NES title, Jane Austen’s 8-bit Adventure is available now for purchase on a physical NES cartridge. Not really the subject matter I expect on an NES game, but it would look great next to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Jane Austen’s 8-bit Adventure is a platformer that stars the 19th-century novelist and author of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen. According to the summary, she finds herself in an 8-bit video game and must “Restore Miss Austen’s…

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn has a new trailer comparing it to the NES version

Inin Games and NatsumeAtari have released a new trailer of Tengo Project’s upcoming remake, Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn. This one shows the new game side-by-side with the 1990 original. If there’s one thing gamers love, it’s comparing things. Shadow of the Ninja is the oldest game that Tengo Project has remade from Natsume’s back catalog, and being on the NES, it was built on limited hardware. Rather than simply spruce up the game like with Wild Guns: Reloaded or create an entirely new entry in the series like…

A pair of modern NES games are being compiled in The Adventures of Panzer: Legacy Collection

Ratalaika has announced that they’re publishing a collection of the two modern NES titles of the The Adventures of Panzer series. The Adventures of Panzer: Legacy Collection comes to Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and Switch on January 26, 2024. The original Adventures of Panzer title was released back in 2021 by Pixelcraft Games. It was built in NES Maker, which means that it runs on original NES hardware. A Kickstarter in 2022 allowed them to also publish the game on cartridge. The Adventures of Panzer 2 followed it up in…

Ayaneo’s latest mini PC looks just like an old-school NES

Back in November, Ayaneo This thing was built to look like a retro Macintosh computer, but the inclusion of older AMD APUs wasn’t exactly going to win any power awards. Now, with a revamped NES-inspired design and a much more impressive chipset. It’s also three times the price. There’s no way around it. This is a truly cute lil mini PC. The boxy NES-era form factor is a treat and you can even order an 8BitDo SNES-style controller and Nuphy greyscale keyboard to go with it, completing the nostalgia trip. Most modern…

Watch Peanut Butter the dog speedrun a retro Nintendo game

For the first time in history, a dog has speedrun a game during Awesome Games Done Quick. Peanut Butter, a Shiba Inu owned by streamer JSR_, speedran the Nintendo Entertainment System title Gyromite by listening to commands from JSR. For those unfamiliar with Gyromite, the player is tasked with both raising and lowering various platforms for a scientist so that they can proceed to the end of a level. JSR got Peanut Butter to play the game by giving various commands, which would cause the Shiba Inu to press a button…
