Nintendo’s ‘1-2 Switch’ party game is getting a sequel

Nintendo is launching a sequel to 1-2 Switch, its party title that features a robust collection of mini-games, on June 30th. It's called Everybody 1-2-Switch!, because you don't even need to use Joy-Cons to participate in some of its games — you can join in, as long as you're using a compatible smartphone. The original 1-2 Switch launched with 28 mini-games meant to get people playing and to liven up get-togethers. Some of them were odd, such as the game where you have to get a crying baby to sleep, but some were oddly…

Nintendo’s big year is about more than games

Nintendo is a company whose success ebbs and flows. The glory days give way to lean periods, but things inevitably rebound. It happens in cycles. The quiet times of the GameCube gave way to the breakout mainstream popularity of the Wii. The humbling days of the Wii U are what paved the way for the transformative success of the Switch. And now, on the eve of the launch of what could be the biggest game of the year, we might just be seeing Nintendo at the peak of its powers. What’s notable about this particular moment is how…

Nintendo’s plumber takes another shot at the silver screen

By Jake Coyle | Associated Press April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain. But it is also, if I check the clock, Mario Time. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” with its vistas of primary colors, is here to brighten our dreary springs, T.S. Eliot be damned. That there is a swell of enthusiasm for a Mario Bros. movie is a once-unthinkable development. The last time Mario hit the big screen was in the little-remembered 1993 live-action film…

My Nintendo’s latest reward is an adorable Kirby and Magolor pouch

I want it I’m a pretty huge fan of Magolar in the Kirby mythos. He’s formidable and cute! Just like Meta Knight, it’s a fantastic combination of shonen-level anime appeal. Frankly, he needs his own game (but I’ll have to settle for his own mode for now). However you feel about him, you can enjoy one of Kirby’s greatest frenemies on a canvas bag as a My Nintendo US reward. Here’s the full description of the bag from Nintendo: “This sturdy canvas pouch has a zipper closure, so it’s the perfect place to store…

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp hands-on: Nintendo’s strategy series is back

There was a period of time when my Game Boy Advance was used almost exclusively for turn-based strategy games. Many, many hours were lost to Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, but the game that sucked me in the most was Advance Wars and its sequel. There was something about its cartoonish take on warfare that made it feel like you were playing a tabletop game, moving little pieces around a board, and its small scale was a perfect fit for playing on the go. Advance Wars is also one of those Nintendo franchises that’s…

Nintendo’s Miyamoto says smartphones won’t ever be Mario’s primary platform

On the eve of the launch of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the pudgy plumber's days on smartphones may be dwindling. In an interview with Variety, celebrated Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto said that "mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games." Instead, he said, the company's strategy going forward is a "hardware and software integrated gaming experience."  Miyamoto's remarks aren't too surprising, considering that the last Mario game on mobile, Dr. Mario World, was pulled from the market just two…
