Huge offshore wind farm Hornsea 2 is fully operational, Orsted says

One of the turbines at the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm. According to Danish energy firm Orsted, the facility has a capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts.OrstedA facility described by Danish energy firm Orsted as the "world's biggest offshore wind farm" is now fully operational, with its 165 turbines set to help power in excess of 1.4 million U.K. homes.Situated roughly 89 kilometers (approximately 55 miles) off the coast of Yorkshire, England, the scale of Hornsea 2 is considerable.According to Orsted, it has a capacity of…

The world’s largest offshore wind farm is now fully operational

The UK’s Hornsea 2, the world’s largest single offshore wind farm, is now fully operational. August 31 update: On August 17, Electrek reported that Hornsea 2 was expected to be fully commissioned before the end of August. Ørsted just slid into home plate today, the last day of the month: Hornsea 2 is now completely powered up. Electrek’s Take: This is a major milestone, not just in the UK, but globally, for offshore wind power and renewables in general. And it’s just the start, as Ørsted alone – not counting…

The world’s deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm produces first power

Seagreen offshore wind farm, 16.7 miles (27 km) off the coast of Angus in eastern Scotland, has generated its first power. The £3 billion ($3.54 million) project will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm. It will also be the world’s deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, as it’s being sited in water depths of up to 194 feet (59 meters). The first of Seagreen’s offshore wind turbines was commissioned yesterday morning. It is one of 114 Vestas turbines that were installed starting in December 2021 — and it was…

The world’s largest offshore wind farm is about to officially launch

The UK’s Hornsea Two, the world’s largest single operational offshore wind farm, is expected to be fully commissioned before the end of August. Map: Hornsea Project The 1.32 GW Hornsea Two will dethrone the 1.2 GW Hornsea One as the largest operating offshore wind farms in the world. It’s 462 square kilometers (178 square miles) in size, and it will power more than 1.3 million homes. Hornsea Two is off the east coast of England and was developed and is owned by Danish wind giant Ørsted. It features 165 Siemens…

Tech’s Offshore Hiring Has Gone Into Overdrive

In the Past year, Sebastián, a developer based in Ecuador, has received more LinkedIn messages from recruiters trying to poach him than ever before. One particular message caught his eye: It was from a Miami-based delivery startup. Sebastián, who asked that his last name not be used to avoid jeopardizing his current employment, was excited by the potential growth opportunity.“I would like to know how companies in the United States work, how things are done there,” he says. Many other experienced developers outside the US…

California aims to score big in the race for offshore wind

California has set a hella ambitious goal to build up its offshore wind industry. The Golden State is aiming to reach 25,000 megawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2045, about as much as all of Europe has today. The target set by the California Energy Commission on Wednesday is the biggest commitment any state has made yet to develop wind farms off of their coasts. The goal is even more monumental considering the US’s fledgling offshore wind industry has really only gained a foothold on the East Coast. So far, there…

The first North American freshwater offshore wind farm will be in Lake Erie

Despite pushback from residents, the Supreme Court of Ohio yesterday approved a permit for the construction of North America’s first freshwater offshore wind farm, which will be cited in Lake Erie, around eight miles north of Cleveland. Residents of Bratenahl, a village in Ohio’s Cuyahoga County on the southern shore of Lake Erie, sued to stop the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation’s (LEEDCo) Icebreaker Wind, a six-turbine, 20.7-megawatt (MW) offshore wind demonstration project, which will test offshore wind…

California sets the largest offshore wind goal of any state in the US

The California Energy Commission (CEC) today set a goal to deploy 25 gigawatts (GW) of offshore floating wind power generation by 2045 after adopting a report that establishes offshore wind goals. California’s AB 525, signed into law in 2021, directed the CEC to “evaluate and quantify the maximum feasible capacity of offshore wind” and set a statewide goal. Preliminary findings in the report set planning goals of 3,000-5,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind by 2030 and 25 GW by 2045. The 2030 target is enough…

California governor calls for a massive 20 GW of offshore wind by 2045

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has called for California to bump up its offshore wind target to at least 20 gigawatts (GW) by 2045, accelerating its 20 GW target by five years. The state’s current offshore wind targets are 15 GW of installed capacity by 2045 and 20 GW by 2050. And to put that into a national context, the Biden administration set a target of 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 for the entire US. In a July 22 letter to the chair of the California Air Resources Board, Newsom wrote about the deployment of…

The Morning After: President Biden’s plan to expand offshore wind farms

President Biden is unveiling further measures to combat climate change, and his latest efforts are aimed at addressing incoming environmental crises. The President has outlined a string of executive actions that include the first wind energy areas in the Gulf of Mexico. The 700,000 acres could generate enough offshore wind power to supply over 3 million homes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also unveiled $2.3 billion in funding to bolster resilience against heat waves, wildfires and other climate…
