Mixtral: Generative Sparse Mixture of Experts in DataFlows

“The Mixtral-8x7B Large Language Model (LLM) is a pre-trained generative Sparse Mixture of Experts.” When I saw this come out it seemed pretty interesting and accessible, so I gave it a try. With the proper prompting, it seems good. I am not sure if it’s better than Google Gemma, Meta LLAMA2, or OLLAMA Mistral for my use cases. Today I will show you how to utilize the new Mixtral LLM with Apache NiFi. This will require only a few steps to run Mixtral against your text inputs. This model can be run by the lightweight…

Building Applications on Open Source LLMs

The computational complexity of AI models is growing exponentially, while the compute capability provided by hardware is growing linearly. Therefore, there is a growing gap between those two numbers, which can be seen as a supply and demand problem. On the demand side, we have everyone wanting to train or deploy an AI model. On the supply side, we have Nvidia and a number of competitors. Currently, the supply side is seeing earnings skyrocket, and the demand side is stockpiling and vying for access to compute. It's a…

Elon Musk says xAI will open-source its Grok chatbot

Elon Musk said on Monday his artificial intelligence startup xAI would take its ChatGPT challenger “Grok” open-source this week, days after he sued OpenAI for abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model. The billionaire has warned on several occasions against the use of technology for profit by big technology companies such as Google. He filed the lawsuit earlier this month against Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which he cofounded in 2015 but left three years later. In response, OpenAI publicized emails that…

Elon Musk says xAI will open-source Grok this week

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI will open-source Grok, its chatbot rivaling ChatGPT, this week, he said, days after suing OpenAI and complaining that the Microsoft-backed startup had deviated from its open source roots.  xAI released Grok, featuring “real-time access” to information, last year. The service is available to customers paying for X’s subscription. Musk helped co-found OpenAI as a counterweight to Google. But OpenAI, which was required to also make its technology “freely available” to the…

The Dark Side of Open Source AI Image Generators

Whether through the frowning high-definition face of a chimpanzee or a psychedelic, pink-and-red-hued doppelganger of himself, Reuven Cohen uses AI-generated images to catch people’s attention. "I've always been interested in art and design and video and enjoy pushing boundaries,” he says—but the Toronto-based consultant, who helps companies develop AI tools, also hopes to raise awareness of the technology’s darker uses.“It can also be specifically trained to be quite gruesome and bad in a whole variety of ways,” Cohen…

artificial intelligence: The great AI debate: Open-source vs proprietary models in global showdown

Chatbots, GPTs and search engines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are the talk of the town, but so are dire warnings about the unbridled development of the ‘revolutionary’ technology and the threat it poses to humans. Industry and policymakers agree that AI needs regulating. But no one is quite sure how. Amidst all of this, a tussle is shaping up, as much by geopolitics as by the surge in research and development. Google Enters the Lightweight AI Market With Gemma

Google has released Gemma, a family of AI models based on the same research as Gemini. Developers can’t quite get their hands into the engine of Google Gemini yet, but what the tech giant released on Feb. 21 is a smaller, open source model for researchers and developers to experiment with. Although generative AI is trendy, organizations may struggle to figure out how to apply it and prove ROI; open source models allow them to experiment with finding practical use cases. Smaller AI models like this don’t quite…

Singapore-based fintech Xalts acquires digital trade platform Contour Network

In a role reversal, Xalts, a Singapore fintech startup founded 18 months ago, has acquired Contour Network, a digital trade platform set up by eight major banks including HSBC, Standard Chartered and BNP. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, but the acquisition price was in the high single millions and composed of cash and stock. Backed by Accel and Citi Ventures, Xalts enables financial institutions to build and manage blockchain-based apps. Contour was started in 2017 by a consortium of eight banks to digitize trade…

Struggling database company MariaDB could be taken private in $37M deal

MariaDB is the subject of another potential takeover bid, as the company behind the eponymous open source relational database management system (RDBMS) confirmed it had received a provisional offer from California-based K1 Investment Management. K1 quietly revealed on Friday that it had tabled what is known as an “unsolicited non-binding indicative proposal” for MariaDB, which — as its name suggests — is a non-binding exploratory offer that may change depending on how negotiations progress in…
