Hubble Captures Images of a Galaxy Whose Outer Edges ‘Resemble a Ship’s Sails’

Hubble Space Telescope provides astronomers with breathtaking images of the cosmos for deeper studies. Recently, the telescope shared yet another strikingly beautiful image. This time, it captured the NGC 3318 galaxy, which lies in the constellation Vela, located about 115 million light-years away from the Earth. The image was shared by the European Space Agency (ESA) on its official Instagram handle. Stating that the spiral arms of the galaxy were lazily draped across in the image, ESA added that “Vela was originally…

China Probably Won’t ‘Take Over’ The Moon, Despite What The NASA Administrator Says

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson recently expressed concerns over China's aims in space, and in particular, that China would, in some way, claim ownership over the Moon and stop other countries from exploring it.  In an interview with a German newspaper, Nelson cautioned, "We must be very concerned that China is landing on the Moon and saying: 'It's ours now and you stay out'." China immediately denounced the claims as a "lie".This spat between the administrator of NASA and Chinese government officials comes at a time when…

Love and Thunder’ Is an Outer Space Mid-life Crisis Rom-Com

Photo by Lisa Maree Williams/Getty Images Taika Waititi’s previous MCU outing, Thor: Ragnarok, was one of the MCU’s most daring films, practically reinventing the character from scratch. And it seems that Waititi is going to keep pushing against expectations in his follow-up, Thor: Love and Thunder, set to debut this week. The director said he approached the film with the intent of shaking up his own fans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smfEF8xeBu4 “I was thinking, what would freak the fans out — and not in a…

I don’t need Starfield because I have The Outer Worlds

Starfield will be one of the biggest games of 2023, but I’m not that excited to play it yet. While  Starfield’s spotlight at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase this year highlighted some impressive features, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d already gotten everything I’d want from a traditional sci-fi RPG like this from another game: The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment. Ironically developed by another Microsoft-owned studio, The Outer Worlds showed that bloating up a sci-fi game with thousands…

Changes in Earth’s Outer Core Revealed by Seismic Waves From Earthquakes

A one-second discrepancy in the travel time of a set of seismic waves gives us an important and unprecedented glimpse of what’s happening deeper in the Earth’s interior.Theory underpins our understanding of convection in the Earth’s outer core and its function in controlling the planet’s magnetic field. Convective flows or how they may be changing have never been directly observed by scientists. Virginia Tech geoscientist Ying Zhou puts proof forward for the first time.A large earthquake shook the Kermadec Islands region…

There’s a Change Happening to Earth’s Outer Core, as Revealed by Seismic Wave Data

Most of our knowledge about what sits at the center of our planet comes from the study of seismic waves rolling out from earthquakes. Careful analysis of these waves can reveal the composition of rocks and metal below Earth's surface.  A new study of seismic waves propagating from two different earthquakes – in similar locations but separated by a gap of 20 years – has revealed changes that are happening in Earth's outer core, the swirling layer of liquid iron and nickel between the mantle (the rock underneath the…

NASA Launches Mini Satellite Capstone to Outer Space in Bid to Return Humans to the Moon

NASA blasted a nanosatellite barely bigger than a microwave oven into outer space Tuesday, part of a landmark mission to return humans to the Moon.A rocket carrying the tiny Capstone module successfully launched from New Zealand's eastern Mahia Peninsula to a deafening blast and a wash of fiery propulsion. All being well, in four months Capstone will be in a position to begin an innovative surfboard-shaped "near rectilinear halo orbits" around the Moon.Weighing about as much as a suitcase, the satellite is trail running an…

Seismic waves from earthquakes reveal changes in the Earth’s outer core

The blue path illustrates a core-penetrating seismic wave moving through a region in the outer core, where the seismic speed has increased because a low-density flow has moved into the region. Credit: Ying Zhou In May 1997, a large earthquake shook the Kermadec Islands region in the South Pacific Ocean. A little over 20 years later, in September 2018, a second big earthquake hit the same location, its waves of seismic energy…
