Sony Temporarily Pulls the Plug on PSVR2 Production

Photo: ESOlex (Shutterstock)Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 is barely a year old, and it appears it’s not catching on like the PS5 when it launched in 2020. There are so many PSVR2 headsets unsold that Sony put the production of new units on hold, according to a Bloomberg report Monday.Since its launch in Feb. 2023, Sony produced approximately 2 million PSVR2 units, each with a price tag of $550. However, the virtual reality headset has yet to take off with only 300,000 sold in the weeks after launch, as reported by Bloomberg

PlayStation VR2 production was reportedly paused by Sony

Sony Sony is reportedly pausing production of the PlayStation VR2 headsets because it has a backlog of unsold headsets. This report comes from Bloomberg, which claims that PSVR2 sales have slowed every quarter since its February 2023 release, causing stocks of the device to build up. It says Sony has produced 2 million headsets but reportedly hasn’t sold through them yet. As a result, it’s apparently pausing the production on new units until it works through some of that backlog, according to Bloomberg’s anonymous…

Akka Arrh brings Atari-era magic to PlayStation VR2

Atari You know that it’s a busy year for gaming when a project by an industry legend launches with hardly any fanfare. That’s exactly what happened in February 2023 with Akka Arrh. Created by Jeff Minter and his eccentric studio Llamasoft, the neon-tinted shooter is a remake of a 1982 Atari game that never saw the light of day after being deemed too difficult. Minter got the greenlight to revive the project, bringing it to life as a retro arcade shooter built in his unmistakable style. While the project was exciting…

PlayStation VR2 PC compatibility is being tested by Sony

When ILMxLAB learned about the PlayStation VR2, Director Jose Perez III thought it was a "no-brainer" for the studio to bring the Oculus Quest game Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge to the new headset."We're always looking at how we can push the fidelity of the work that we're doing," Perez III tells Digital Trends in an interview. "PlayStation VR2 is ridiculously powerful; we got really excited about what we could bring to that. We started talking with our friends at Sony because we had a great relationship…

One year later, PlayStation VR2 has yet to impress me

Giovanni Colantonio One year ago, I took my first step into virtual reality with the PlayStation VR2. One year later, I haven’t walked much further. I spent a long time watching the VR sect of the gaming medium from the sidelines, curious about this new form of interaction, but never taking the full plunge. Impressed with the PSVR2’s specs and confident in Sony’s first-party capabilities, I bought it at launch in February 2022. After a week of use, I wrote that I “anticipate it’ll be a very supplemental gaming style…

VR gaming lost me in 2023, and then totally won me back

If you’d asked me where I stood on VR gaming back in early May of this year, it would have been a dire conversation. A little over a month into the PlayStation VR2’s life span, I was feeling entirely disillusioned with the tech. Headsets liked the Meta Quest 2 had stopped delivering fresh experiences that felt like they could transcend the technical gimmick and PSVR2 felt dead in the water on day one. Despite being a firm supporter of VR for a decade, I felt like the train was about to leave the station for me.…

PlayStation set up dominos in 2023. But will they fall in 2024?

2023 has already become a strong contender for the best year in gaming ever (at least when it comes to newly released games), but we’ve yet to see how it’ll be remembered for PlayStation long-term. It currently stands as an experimental year filled with massive gambles that we won’t see the results of until 2024 at the earliest. From an outside perspective, 2023 might’ve seemed like PlayStation was resting on its laurels. With more hit third-party releases than most people could reasonably handle hitting on a near…

The best PS5 games of 2023: Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, and more

Digital Trends With the video game industry as busy as it is these days, there’s rarely ever a “bad” year for any console. Even in a less busy year, platforms like Xbox still tend to have highlights in exciting indie games. That was true for PlayStation this year, which continued its strong momentum this generation despite only having a handful of big-ticket games. While not every big PS5 exclusive thrilled this year, there were a lot of strong experiences to dive into. Developers got more mileage than ever out of…
