Wildest Proposals if He Wins 2024 Election

Donald Trump reportedly did not expect to win the presidency in 2016, which isn’t surprising considering how ill-prepared he and his team were to take control of the country. He appointed established conservatives to key positions before learning some had personal principles that extended beyond indulging the president’s ego. Trump wreaked havoc on the United States for four years, but the damage might have been even greater if he wasn’t battling career public servants who tried to check his impulses, or if he wasn’t…

EU consortium for edge AI calls for design proposals

Four leading European research institutes — CEA-Leti in France, IMEC in Belgium, Fraunhofer in Germany, and VTT in Finland — are accepting design proposals to prototype edge AI technologies at their facilities. In 2022, the institutes set up an EU consortium to accelerate testing and development of edge AI hardware. Dubbed Prevail, the project will create a multi-hub network that will validate new, low-power, and high-performance edge AI components. It will also build infrastructure to…

Semiconductors have grown into a key geopolitical battleground, with the US, Japan and China investing heavily in developing domestic capabilities. The Indian government, after years of watching from the sidelines of the chips race, now has to evaluate USD 21 billion of semiconductor proposals and divvy up taxpayer support between foreign chipmakers, local champions or some combination of the two.Israel’s Tower Semiconductor Ltd. is proposing a USD 9 billion plant, while

Colorado oil-gas conflicts stoked by legislation, ballot proposals

Four years after an overhaul of Colorado’s oil and gas rules that was meant to cool conflicts over drilling, a draft bill that would phase out new permits for wells is running up the temperature. Fanning the heat even more are ballot proposals that could restrict efforts to boost renewable energy. Gov. Jared Polis said he hoped a law approved in 2019 would end the state’s “oil and gas wars” by tightening regulations and putting protection of public health and the environment front and center. But growing concerns about…

Bethesda Softworks apparently rejected multiple proposals from Obsidian Entertainment to create more games in the Fallout series, after the release of 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas. Fallout: New Vegas was the only title Obsidian Entertainment worked on in the Fallout franchise, but according to co-founder and former chief creative officer Chris Avellone, the studio pitched further games to Bethesda alongside ideas for Elder Scrolls spin-offs. All of them were turned down. Taking to social media last year to answer about the…

How the block on Montana’s TikTok ban could thwart other proposals

The defeat of Montana’s TikTok ban in federal court could deter other lawmakers from moving ahead with efforts to block the popular video-sharing app facing bipartisan backlash. There was mounting scrutiny over TikTok before Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed a law in May banning the app. House lawmakers grilled TikTok’s CEO in March as momentum and pressure built to ban the app. Dozens of states and the federal government followed up with narrower bans, restricting the TikTok from government-owned devices.…

Three proposals from researchers to meet EU climate goals

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain The EU countries have decided that the EU is to be climate neutral by 2050. By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions must have been reduced by at least 55% compared to 1990. To meet this target, continued vigorous efforts are needed to reduce emissions, but that alone will not be enough. This is the conclusion of seven researchers from

Independent Ada Lovelace Institute Asks UK Government to Firm up AI Regulation Proposals

While the United Nations hashes out regulations, the UK’s ‘context-based’ approach is intended to spur innovation but may cause uncertainty in the industry. Image: Shuo/Adobe Stock Attempts to create standards and regulations for the way generative AI intersects with many aspects of society are underway across the world. For instance, in March, the U.K. government released a white paper promoting the country as a place to “turbocharge growth” in AI. According to the white paper, 500,000 people in the…
