Skullcandy’s new wireless earbuds are made primarily out of recycled plastics

Skullcandy just announced new earbuds that go all-in on sustainability. The EcoBuds True Wireless earbuds are made with 65 percent certified recycled plastics and 57 percent less heavy metals than competing products. This gives the earbuds a 50 percent lower carbon footprint when compared to rival devices. The bad news? The move toward sustainability forced Skullcandy to nix the usual battery case that accompanies modern earbuds, as lithium battery packs are a To make up for the lack of a charging case, the new earbuds can…

New Technique Allows Diapers To Be Recycled 200 Times Faster

Superabsorbers become liquid under UV light after they have taken up sufficient water. Then, they can be reused. Credit: Ken Pekarsky, KIT Water and UV radiation effectively and swiftly break down the crosslinked polymers in diaper liners without the use of any chemicals. This process allows the recycled plastic molecules to be repurposed for diverse applications. Superabsorbent materials, like sodium polyacrylate, are key components in various hygiene and medical products, including diapers, bandages, and dressing…

Toyota signs deal to buy recycled battery components from Redwood Materials

Today Toyota and leading recycling specialist Redwood Materials announced a new expansion that brings the messy and complicated global supply chain of battery components one step closer to a circular battery ecosystem, all on American soil. The two have announced today that Redwood Materials, a US-based company specializing in recycling, refining, and remanufacturing used battery materials, will supply Toyota with cathode material and anode copper foil for its EV lineup. These components represent…

Impressive new plastic self-heals, can be recycled and feeds marine life

Japanese scientists have developed a new type of plastic that’s strong at room temperature, but can be easily broken down on demand into its base components. In seawater, it starts to break down into food for marine life, and just to top it off, it can self-heal and remember past shapes.Plastic is everywhere in our modern world, for better or worse. Its toughness makes it an extremely useful material for everything from household items to vehicle parts, but that same toughness makes it hard to break down for recycling or…

Watt Electric Vehicle Company’s van made from recycled aluminum

UK startup Watt Electric Vehicle Company (WEVC) has announced an interesting new partnership today as it looks to reach production of its flagship commercial van, the eCV1. Together with the help of leading Norwegian industrial company Hydro, WEVC hopes to deliver an electric van built from recycled aluminum that can last decades and potentially enable closed-loop production. Watt Electric Vehicle Company, or WEVC for short, is a UK-based EV startup building upon net-zero goals from its inception,…

Heaps of pharmaceuticals, toxic chemicals found in recycled plastics

While the use of recycled plastics is normally considered a noble endeavor, a new study says it's time to think twice. In an analysis of the material from more than 10 different countries, hundreds of potentially harmful chemicals were uncovered. The study, led by scientists at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, looked at recycled plastic pellets from 13 nations in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. By using a range of chemical analysis tools, it was found that the pellets all contained a mind-boggling…

Recycled Gas Feeds a Massive Galaxy in the Early Universe

Researchers have found evidence of enriched gas recycling during galaxy formation in the early Universe by observing a massive galaxy at redshift 2.3 using the Keck II and Subaru telescopes. The gas surrounding the galaxy contains elements heavier than helium, which are believed to be the result of stellar processes such as supernovae. Kinematic modeling of the observations shows that streams of this enriched gas spiral into the galaxy, providing additional fuel for rapid star formation. Credit: Department of Astronomy,…

Ultima Multipath ebike has a recycled plastic/alloy frameset

Although ebikes are generally thought of as a green form of transportation, most are made of materials with a fairly large carbon footprint. The Multipath is a bit different, in that its frame is made of recycled plastic and alloy.Manufactured by French mobility company Ultima, the Multipath's monocoque frame consists of a single piece of injection-moulded composite resin. That resin is in turn made up of a mixture of recycled plastic and aluminum alloy. Because the one-piece frame contains no joins between separate…
