One of the great rivalries in PCs could collapse

Intel Intel always competes against AMD, both make some of the best processors, and the sky is blue — what else is new? Well, it turns out that one of those statements might not be as true as it was just last week. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed that Intel’s own fabs are open to making chips for some of the biggest companies in tech, and that even includes its long-standing rival AMD. Gelsinger spoke during the first Intel Foundry Direct Connect in San Jose, California, about the operations of its new fab, which…

Intel road map explained: going beyond 2027

Intel revealed a new road map at its Intel Foundry Services (IFS) Direct event that will take the company into 2027. It’s an extension of the road map Intel laid out nearly three years ago, shortly after Intel’s CEO Pat Gelsinger took the reins of the company. Although processor road maps aren’t anything new, Intel has delivered on the cadence it laid out a few years ago. This updated road map shows what comes next as we approach the end of the original plan Gelsinger laid out. Keep in mind that Intel is focused on…

Intel hasn’t given up on GPUs, and we should all be happy

Against all odds, it appears that Intel is still on course with its next-gen graphics cards, and its plans reach far into the future. A new report tells us that Intel may have ordered a large number of GPU chips from TSMC. While Intel Arc struggles to compete against the best graphics cards, this is still great news for the GPU market as a whole — here’s why. Compared to AMD and Nvidia, Intel is still very new to the discrete GPU market, and it only has a limited number of cards up for grabs. The range is…

Nvidia is leveraging GPUs to build 2nm (and smaller) chips

As part of Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC), the company announced a new software library that will enable 2nm and smaller transistors. The library is called cuLitho, and Nvidia has already partnered with the world’s largest semiconductor companies to use the tech, including TSMC and Synopsys. The software stack is built for computational lithography, which is the process of etching the components of a processor into a silicon wafer. Lithography has gotten more complex as the demand for smaller manufacturing…

Apple supplier TSMC will start production of 3nm chips soon

Image Source : PIXABAY Apple Apple's main chip supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will reportedly start mass production of its 3-nanometer chip process for the next generations of Mac, iPhone and other Apple devices in the coming days. TSMC will hold a "ceremony at Fab 18 at the Southern Taiwan Science Park" (STSP) on Thursday and will also…

Sony, Toyota Join Forces to Flex Japan’s Semiconductor Muscles

Photo: Joesp Lago (Getty Images)Some of Japan’s leading tech companies are joining forces as part of a $500 million push by their host government to cement Japan’s status as leader in the advanced semiconductor space.Sony, SoftBank, and Toyota are among the firms working with chipmakers on a new initiative called “Rapidus” which aims to design and develop the new chips by the end of the decade, according to The Wall Street Journal. The diversity of the firms involved reflects the wide variety of chips needed to power the

Taiwan Says U.S. Doesn’t Need to Blow Up TSMC if China Invades

The TSMC building in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan could be a major target for China if they were to ever invade, and some former U.S. officials have mumbled about the need to prepare for “scorched earth” to deny China the company’s assets.Photo: Annabelle Chih (Getty Images)Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is, by many estimates, the most important chipmaker in the world, both monetarily and for the worldwide tech supply chain. If the global economy suddenly lost access to TSMC’s chipmaking expertise, it could
