Colorado mountain resorts pioneered inclusionary zoning

Decades ago, Colorado’s mountain communities, struggling with sky-high real estate values, implemented “inclusionary” ordinances that required developers to set aside a share of the units they built at a lower price or lower rent. Aspen, Colorado, consistently tops the list of the most expensive places in the world to live on March 4, 2024. Nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen boasts one of the highest concentrations of ultra-expensive real estate globally, intensifying the struggle for affordable housing options…

Ikon pass price increase for 2024-25 ski season

Denver-based Alterra Mountain Company revealed early-bird price increases for next year’s Ikon passes on Thursday that were less than the increases rival Vail Resorts announced Tuesday for its Epic passes. But Ikon passes still cost more than comparable Epic passes. When Ikon passes go on sale next Thursday, the early-bird cost will be $1,249, which is $267 more than the comparable Epic Pass. The Ikon Base Pass will cost $869, which is $138 more than the Epic Local pass. Year-over-year, Ikon increased $90, a 7.7%…

A minor league baseball team trolls Disney with its ‘Steamboat Willie’ jerseys

I’ve seen enough: The prize for the best use of public domain Mickey Mouse goes to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. For its public domain theme night, the minor league baseball team will wear jerseys made entirely of iconic images that are no longer protected by copyright: Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” King Kong, and the earliest depiction of Mickey Mouse from the 1928 short “Steamboat Willie.” “Steamboat Willie” entered the public domain when the clock struck midnight to ring in 2024, marking the first time that any…

‘Steamboat Willie’ Horror Game Developers Deny Nazi References

Just hours after Disney‘s copyright on the earliest version of Mickey Mouse expired, creators announced their intent to cash in on the likeness of the cartoon icon as he appears in his breakthrough 1928 animated short, Steamboat Willie. At least two Mickey-themed horror movies are reportedly in the works, though if last year’s dreadful Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey is any indication, you’ll want to skip this next round of gimmicky carnage. You may also think twice about playing a supposedly forthcoming…

Steamboat Willie Horror Game Devs Swear They’re Not Making Neo-Nazi References

A decade ago, Facebook’s internal motto was “move fast and break things.” There is now an important, wordy update to that motto as a holistic piece of advice: move fast on exploiting Mickey Mouse’s public domain status and... don’t maybe do some anti-Semitism along the way?Meta's Apparent Firing GoofSuch was the case for the game now formerly known as Infestation 88. Announced by Nightmare Forge Games on New Year’s Day to coincide with Steamboat Willie’s entry into the public domain (and with it, the earliest versions of…

Of Course the First Steamboat Willie Horror Movie Is Already Here

The start of 2024 saw a major milestone in U.S. copyright law as Steamboat Willie—and with it the very first versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse—entered public domain for the first time. As with classics before it, in record time people took to announcing what is now inevitable for any new public domain work: what if this classic work was dark and twisted actually?Let’s Eat a Chocolate Xbox ControllerAfter Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey already turned A.A. Milne’s children’s tale into a gory, atrocious horror film, now…

Mickey Mouse Horror Films Come as Steamboat Willie Enters Public Use

As much grief as we give Disney Adults, one of the most shamed groups of people on the internet, we must now all come together to defeat a much greater evil: the directors creating horror films using beloved childhood Disney characters as they begin to enter public domain. The copyright on the version of Mickey Mouse from the debut short, Steamboat Willie (1928), expired as we entered the new year. Already, details — and even a trailer — have been shared about two upcoming movies starring the darling rodent in a…

Coloradans keep the Western tradition alive

Chris Christmas, a fourth-generation Black cowboy with Native American roots, considers the cowboy hat to be an indispensable part of his heritage. “I think I was born with a cowboy hat,” said the 57-year-old Denverite, whose family has resided in Colorado for 120 years. With dozens of hats in his collection today, “I buy them like sneakers,” he laughed. Christmas is pressing against the longstanding stereotype of a white-washed American West by working with hat shaper Parker Orms on a line of headwear stylized on “the…

Forest Service recreation plan in Steamboat Springs area draws fire

A plan long in the works to respond to demands for more mountain-biking trails in the Steamboat Springs area is being criticized as not taking enough steps to protect one of Colorado’s largest elk herds. The Routt National Forest released a draft environmental assessment and proposal for the Mad Rabbit trails project in October and will review the comments and feedback before issuing a  preliminary decision, possibly by April or May. People will then be able to file comments and objections before a final decision is…
