The business behind Tesla opening its Supercharger network: selling ‘memberships’

While I believe Tesla’s move to open its Supercharger network to other automakers is ultimately going to have a great impact on EV adoption, it is also a smart business move from Tesla. Here’s the business behind Tesla opening its Supercharger network. Tesla, to no fault of its own, has been using its Supercharger network as a moat in the North American EV market. While most other automakers selling electric vehicles left the charging experience in the hands of third-party charging networks, Tesla…

Rivian confirms Tesla Supercharger access in March

Rivian confirmed that its EV owners are going to start having access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in March. With Ford EV owners officially getting access to the Supercharger network today, I would assume that every other brand that adopted NACS are getting bombarded by inquires from their EV owners about when they will access what is widely recognized as the best charging network. We reported that Tesla signaled that “Rivian, General Motors, Volvo, and Polestar” are next by this Spring. Now,…

Ford’s Tesla Supercharger adapter is now available to order for free

Last May, Ford was the first automaker to announce its plans to adopt Tesla’s charge connector, now known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS). In addition to adding Tesla’s connector to its own EVs in 2025, Ford also said it would make a free adapter available to existing Ford EV owners. Starting today, Ford says that eligible Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners can request their free CCS to NACS adapter. The first deliveries are slated to begin shipping in March. Ford is also starting to…

Tesla plans new world’s largest Supercharger, a glimpse at the future of charging

Tesla is planning to build a new world’s largest Supercharger station, and it might give us a glimpse at the future of electric car charging. There’s no doubt that Tesla has the best charging network, the Supercharger network, but it still has room to improve. It’s not even just about improving but evolving with the different needs of the growing fleet of electric vehicles in North America. We need more stations, with more stalls per station, and we need different configurations to make them…

Ford will provide free adapters to access Tesla’s Supercharger network

Ford announced that it will provide free adapters for Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners to access Tesla’s Supercharger network. Ford was the first to sign a deal with Tesla to adopt its charge connector, now known as NACS, in its future electric vehicles. It sent the ball rolling, and now virtually all automakers in North America have adopted it – making it the new standard charge connector in North America. The bulk of the deal was for Ford to incorporate the NACS connector in its…

GM and Ford EV owners to get Tesla Supercharger access as soon as February

GM and Ford EV owners are going to be the first to gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network starting in February 2024. Virtually all automakers selling electric vehicles in North America have announced that they will adopt Tesla’s NACS connector in future electric vehicles to take advantage of the Supercharger network. Most of them have said that the rollout will take the form of an adapter in 2024 followed by a direct integration on new electric vehicles starting in 2025. Now, we get new…

Tesla brings in congestion fee for Supercharger stations

Tesla has been charging an idle fee for years in a bid to free up its Superchargers and prevent traffic jams at charging stations. But now it’s introducing a new congestion fee, which in some places will replace the idle fee. To recap, idle fees kick in when a Supercharger station is at 50% capacity. It means that if a car is left plugged in after it’s become fully charged, the owner has to pay 50 cents a minute until they leave. If the station is 100% occupied, the fee doubles to $1 a minute. The Tesla app lets…

Tesla’s idle fees will charge drivers who keep their cars plugged in after they’ve topped up

Tesla, which hosts for electric vehicles globally, is a new fee system that the company hopes will free up charging traffic at its stations. Supercharger idle fees will roll out globally, while congestion fees will specifically be implemented in the US.Idles fees will kick in and start charging drivers on a per-minute basis when a car remains stationed at a charging point after it has already been fully recharged. Through the Tesla app, the company says drivers will be alerted when their charge is near complete and once…
