HT reviewer Syed Saad Ahmed picks his favourite read of 2023

Have you heard the story about crabs in a bucket? When one tries to escape, others claw it down, giving rise to the term “crab mentality”. I find the tale, often proffered with trite self-help nuggets, grating. Not only do we ascribe imagined motivations to crabs, we place them in a situation they would have never encountered without human intervention and then make generalizations about their “mentality”. Narratives that unfold parallelly even as they inform each other. (Little, Brown and Company) Beyond…

HT reviewer Syed Saad Ahmed picks his favourite reads of 2022

The newsletter Words for Worlds by Gautam Bhatia revealed a big lacuna in my bookshelf: science fiction. While I enjoy the genre, my acquaintance with it is woeful. So I tried to read more sci-fi this year. I’m glad I did because the two books I began with, The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin and The Calcutta Chromosome by Amitav Ghosh, were my most delectable reads of 2022.The novels are similar in some ways. They have plots so electrifying, I often sacrificed my sleep to gorge on the next reveal. The worlds they built…

Review: Syed Mahmood; Colonial India’s Dissenting Judge by Mohammad Nasir and Samreen Ahmad

Not many know about an Indian justice of the court who thwarted the colonial British government’s subjugation of Indians often with the tacit support of the judiciary. His legal acumen pierced through the inherent racism of the British judicial system of the period and paved the way for democratic adjudicatory governance. Syed Mahmood (1850-1903) served the Allahabad High Court as Justice between 1887 and 1893 and knocked down the colonial British judicial system’s hierarchy. He contextualized dissent within the cultural…
