Nvidia RTX 4080 Super vs. AMD RX 7900 XTX: game over

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends Whether you pick the RTX 4080 Super or the RX 7900 XTX, you’re getting a powerful GPU that’s capable of seamless gaming at 4K. But which one is better for the money? There used to be a clear answer to that question when we were only dealing with the RTX 4080, but the release of its Super successor made it a lot less straightforward. Both the RTX 4080 Super and the RX 7900 XTX are among the best graphics cards that money can buy. While they’re close in performance, they’re not exactly the…

AMD has confirmed that some RX 7900 XTX GPUs are overheating

Several user reports have appeared since the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card last month that claim the GPU is impacted by performance issues due to running at excessively high temperatures. Now, AMD has released a statement acknowledging that some Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference GPUs have been affected by a manufacturing fault. The issues were initially reported on forums like Reddit where multiple users said their RX 7900 GPUs were overheating, which throttled performance and in some cases, crashed their…

Here’s the worrying reason the AMD 7900 XTX is overheating

It’s been known for some time that AMD’s RX 7900 XTX graphics cards are prone to overheating, and previous reporting has highlighted that the problem is bad enough to cause some serious throttling. Now, we might know exactly what is causing the problem — and it’s bad news for AMD users. That’s because noted tech expert Igor Wallossek of Igor’s Lab has published an investigation offering up his own analysis. After reaching out to various industry sources, Wallossek believes the problem lies with the 7900 XTX’s vapor…

AMD RX 7900 XTX: ray tracing in 14 games with mixed results

AMD’s recently launched RX 7900 XTX has received a warm reception, mainly on the back of the value it offers compared to Nvidia’s competing RTX 4080. One area where Nvidia still has a lead, though, is ray tracing. AMD is lacking in the ray tracing department, but the RX 7900 XTX has made some big strides compared to the previous generation. In the last-gen battle, ray tracing was a non-option on most AMD GPUs. Nvidia still clearly has a lead, but I wanted to look deeper into the ray tracing experience on AMD’s latest…

AMD responds to GPU overheating issues with RX 7900 XTX

As the number of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX owners reporting overheating grows, the company has responded. Initially, complaints were met with a simple statement that temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius were normal and not a cause for concern. That meant requests to return AMD RX 7900 XTX reference graphics cards were denied. While reaching 110 degrees Celsius might be acceptable, thermal throttling is unexpected behavior. AMD is now asking anyone experiencing throttling to contact AMD customer support for assistance.…

Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT review: AMD’s ‘reasonable’ stab at 4K gaming

While I was eager to see how these new GPUs compared to NVIDIAs, I had to go through several rounds of driver and motherboard BIOS updates on my Ryzen 9 7900X before both cards were stable enough to actually use. That's something I occasionally run into when testing cutting-edge hardware (NVIDIA's cards also required a BIOS update), but there were still issues with AMD's cards even after that. Halo Infinite, for example, refused to launch matches with either card. Sometimes my PC would completely shut…

AMD RX 7900 XTX vs. Nvidia RTX 4080: a clear winner

AMD’s long-awaited RX 7900 XTX is here, and given its price, a lot of gamers have a tough decision between the RTX 7900 XTX and Nvidia’s RTX 4080. Both are among the best graphics cards you can buy, but one of them is clearly better for most people. The RX 7900 XTX simply offers a better value, and although the RTX 4080 has better features and ray tracing support, AMD still comes out on top given how much cheaper its GPU is. I’ll break down specs, performance, ray tracing, and more here, but make sure to read my RTX…

Where to buy the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT, announced last month, are the company’s answer to Nvidia’s RTX 40 Series, and they’re set to go on sale today. AMD has said the new cards should be up to 70% faster than their predecessors and come with 1.5x better FPS in COD: MW2 and 1.7x in Cyberpunk 2077. The new cards sport a new chiplet-based design, which should allow for improved yields and lower costs of manufacturing, translating into lower consumer prices – and considering AMD’s cards are much cheaper than…

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT / XTX review: 4K performance for less

I was impressed with AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s RTX 3080 two years ago, but can team red manage to beat Nvidia’s RTX 4080 two years later? Well, the answer is yes, absolutely yes, and for $200 less. The Radeon RX 7900 XT ($899) and XTX ($999) cards are designed to deliver next-gen gaming performance at under $1,000, and at the top end (XTX), AMD manages to comfortably beat Nvidia’s latest RTX 4080 ($1,199) card in a variety of games at 4K. If I were in the market for a $1,000 GPU right now, I’d have to seriously think twice…
