Tata Motors starts development on Harrier Facelift: Details

According to Motoroctane, Tata Motors has started working on a facelift of the Harrier. It has been codenamed “Q5MCE” and is currently under development. It will continue to go against SUVs like MG Hector, Mahindra XUV700, Jeep Compass and higher variants of mid-size SUVs like Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta.

The Harrier has been on sale for a few years now, with Tata launching a substantial update in 2020. The SUV continues to look butch and fresh even after being on road for quite a few years.  However, the SUV segment is currently very competitive and manufacturers are trying their best to keep their vehicles up to date by adding more and more features.

In terms of design, we expect a new set of headlamps. Although, it might continue to come with a split headlamp design. The bumpers would also be redesigned along with the grille. On the sides, there would be a new set of alloy wheels which are expected to be diamond-cut units.

On the inside, there could be updates to the upholstery and materials used. There are reports that Tata Motors is developing a larger infotainment system for their vehicles which is a good thing because as of now, Tata’s vehicles lack the fluidity, touch response and screen size that the competitors are offering.

Other features that Tata Motors is expected to add to the Harrier with a 360-degree parking camera that will help the driver parking the SUV easily, ambient lighting, a fully digital instrument cluster, an electronic parking brake etc. The new hot tech in the automotive industry is ADAS or Advanced Driver Aids System. Tata might add ADAS to Harrier also.  Harrier is already one of the best riding SUVs in the segment. It is being said that Tata Motors wants to improve the ride quality even further.

Tata Motors will continue to offer the 2.0-litre Kyrotec diesel engine that is sourced from Fiat. It produces 170 PS of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The manufacturer is also working on a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It is a four-cylinder version of the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that we have seen on the Nexon and Altroz iTurbo. The power output is expected to be 160 PS. As of now, we do not have the figure for torque output. However, we expect it to be around 250 Nm. Tata Motors might use direct injection technology but as of now, the information about the new 1.5-litre petrol engine is scarce.

It is expected that Tata Motors will launch the Harrier Facelift next year. With the addition of the petrol engine, the starting price of the SUV will go down. However, the overall price would also increase because of the facelift.
