Teacher makes Solar-powered Maruti Suzuki 800 in Kashmir [Video]
Amongst the hype about electric mobility in the country, most of us do not have the idea of another cleaner mode of mobility – solar vehicles. While all the carmakers are now aggressively strategizing about electric cars, very few are working towards developing solar vehicles. One of the main reasons behind the lack of growth in the development of solar cars is their high development costs. However, a man from Kashmir has come up with a cost-effective car which operates on solar energy.
The said car has been developed by a mathematics teacher hailing from Kashmir, named Bilal Ahmed. Bilal is an avid automobile enthusiast and was working on this project of the affordable solar car for the past eleven years. He started working on this project in 2009 and claims that while his car might look basic as compared to modern-era vehicles, it has got some aspects which are as good as other luxury cars.

The car developed by Bilal Ahmad features monocrystalline solar panels, which can generate maximum electricity with minimum solar energy obtained. The weather conditions in Kashmir make the process of storing solar energy a bit difficult. These panels occupy surface areas on the hood, side window panels, rear windscreen and boot lid. This three-door compact car also features Mercedes SLS AMG-like gullwing doors and gets an automatic transmission on board.
The main intention of Bilal Ahmad behind the development of this solar-powered car is to make this technology more accessible to the common people, who are frustrated with rising fuel prices. He wants to make affordable cars without compromising on the features of a luxury car. In his statement to the media, Bilal said that he wants to make the experience of owning a luxury car from brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Ferrari into a much more affordable package. This idea encouraged him to come up with this self-developed solar car.
To develop this solar car, Bilal sought inspiration and knowledge by watching car modification and technology videos on the internet. In the start, he wanted to make an affordable car for disabled people but discarded the idea due to financial constraints. He also added that no one came forward with any kind of financial aid in the development of his solar car project.
The solar car developed by Bilal Ahmed is now garnering attention from all over the world and has collected praises from many people, including the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Omar Abdullah. In one of his recent tweets, Abdullah wrote, “It seems the car could one day also fly. The car has solar panels on the body and a charging point inside”, along with images of the solar car.
