‘The Bear’ Wins Comedy Emmy
The Bear cooked up a win at the Emmy Awards on Monday night, taking home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Matty Matheson started to make an acceptance speech but didn’t get very far before co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach walked over and kissed him on the mouth as the crowd burst into cheers.
“I just want to thank restaurants as a whole hospitality as a whole,” Matheson said before the smooch.
“I just love restaurants so much: the good, the bad, the rough. We’re all broken inside, and every single day, we got to show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something and sitting at a table,” Matheson said. “it’s really beautiful, and all of us here get to make a show together. And we get to make people feel good or filled with anxiety or triggered.”
“This is really amazing. It’s beautiful. The cast and crew. There’s so many people that make this show happen every single day,” he continued. “And it’s really beautiful. It’s hard work. It’s early hours. We don’t see the sun for three months. We shoot on a soundstage. It’s really cool. I’ve never been on one before. I’ve never acted before. I love all these people so much.”
Natasha Lyonne and Tracee Ellis Ross presented the award during an I Love Lucy-inspired sketch. The win comes just over a week after the FX and Hulu series was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
The Bear brings enough drama to the table that an appearance in the Outstanding Drama Series category wouldn’t have been out of place, but the antics of the Chicago kitchen staff at the heart of the show makes it feel right at home in comedy, too. The series stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Matty Matheson.
The Bear faced off against a stacked set of nominees, including Abbott Elementary, Barry, Jury Duty, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso, and Wednesday.
The Bear swept the awards show with Jeremy Allen White winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Moss-Bachrach winning for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Ayo Edebiri for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Christopher Storer winning for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
“In an era of just-good-enough scripted television, filled with shows that have all the ingredients but not the artistry to make the recipe work, here was a show — created by Ramy vet Christopher Storer, and alternately directed by him and Joanna Calo — that instantly had a sense of place, had clear conflicts and character arcs, and did not seem to be following any particular Peak TV playbook,” Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall wrote in a review of the show’s first season, which premiered in July 2022.
The 75th Emmy Awards were originally scheduled to take place on Sept. 18, but the prolonged Hollywood strikes meant that the show was postponed four months to Jan. 15, 2024.
