The Kang Dynasty’ Release Date

Disney has been dealing with a lot lately — whether it is the writers’ guild strike, the whole Ron DeSantis fiasco, the lukewarm response to Quantumania, or the fact that another Marvel actor has joined Jonathan Majors in the controversy club. It was a matter of when and not if the Mouse House would delay its upcoming slate of content and it was a no-brainer that of all the Marvel Studios servings, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was bound to join the delays.

The film was first announced back in 2022, during the San Diego Comic-Con, by Kevin Feige – who revealed that the film was in development and would be released on May 2, 2025. It was soon confirmed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker — Destin Daniel Cretton — would be directing the film based on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness’ script.

But these announcements were made at a time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was riding high on the success of Phase Three thanks to Avengers: Endgame and was pumped about debuting its brand-new villain. But the whole picture has gone downhill since then, thus prompting a change in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’s release date.

The highly-anticipated Phase Six film was already expected to be delayed based on reports of its production kickstarting in the spring of 2024 – which would have made it impossible for The Kang Dynasty to maintain its original release date.

But no one expected it to be pushed back an entire year. The film has been delayed from May 2, 2025 to May 1, 2026, which means it is switching places with Avengers: Secret Wars, which is now releasing on May 7, 2027.

Why is it getting postponed by a year? Majors’ controversy that is still very much alive and kicking (though Marvel has a readymade solution to keep the actor and Kang), the negative feedback to Loveness’ script for Quantumania, the ongoing writers’ strike — take your pick.
