James Gunn might be gone from the MCU forever, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for the Guardians of the Galaxy. Even if fans of Marvel have shown a serious lack of imagination when it comes to a suitable replacement.

GotG Vol. 3 was a pretty fantastic swansong for Gunn’s career in the MCU. While it definitely has its flaws the film was received well by fans and critics, causing many to claim the director had single-handedly saved Marvel. With future prospects looking brighter, thoughts have already turned to the next film in the franchise. Who could possibly step into the big boots of Gunn and helm the next Guardians adventure? Marvel backers have thrown about a few ideas, but Twitter user “Dermot Mulroney Facts” criticized the lack of imagination when it comes to the new suggestions after one fan suggested Edgar Wright as director for the next film.

cbm fans only know like five directors outside of the cbm sphere man I’m dying over this

To be fair naming five people who haven’t directed a comic book movie yet might be a bit of a challenge. It seems everybody in the industry has been involved with such adaptations at some point in their career. Of course, Edgar Wright’s vision for the first Ant-Man and his decision to walk from the project due to creative differences is notorious among the fanbase. Would he even consider coming back to the MCU again? Probably not, but he has confirmed that he and Marvel head Kevin Feige are on talking terms again so anything could happen.

Perhaps it’s too soon to be thinking about who could replace Gunn; after all, it’s not even been two weeks since the third film hit theaters. Whilst GotG 4 is an inevitability it will be a very different film with a very different team, we’re not going to get the same type of humor and charm that Gunn brought to the table.

There’s an ocean of directors out there that could give fans what they want. Although most do tend to fly under the radar. The Twitter user went on to specify the five directors that they were talking about.

for reference those five directors are

Steven Spielberg

James Cameron

Quentin Tarantino

Edgar Wright

and Rian Johnson

Some rightly pointed out that Edgar Wright doesn’t even count because he directed Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, arguably the best comic book adaptation there is. All of these directors are well known in the mainstream and none of them seem like the type to jump in bed with Marvel anytime soon.

It does get tiring to see the same names coming up again and again in fan suggestions. Seeing some fresh talent in the industry could revive comic book movies after so many disappointments lately. Let’s not forget that Gunn himself was relatively unknown before GotG; so maybe it’s time to start casting the net a little wider and taking a chance on a less established director.
