The Pixel 8 camera has a bug that kills the tap to expose feature
The Google Pixel 8 (Review) has one of the most powerful cameras of any smartphone today, so any bug that occurs sticks out that much more. Right now, Pixel 8 users are experiencing a bug where the tap to expose feature is not working. This feature is a bit weird, however.
When using the Pixel 8 camera, you have the ability to adjust the exposure of the image based on the area you tap. Tapping on bright areas will lower the exposure and tapping on darker areas will raise it. This is just in case you want the image to look brighter or darker than what the camera automatically assigns.
The Pixel 8 is experiencing a tap to expose bug
This bug is pretty annoying, but it’s weird in a way. This bug was discovered in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro Camera app version 9.2.113.600672654.18. When you open the app and tap on an area to change the exposure, it will do so. However, if you try to re-expose it by tapping a different area, it will not let you. So, you have one shot to get the proper exposure.
What makes it weird is that it only wants to affect the camera at 1x zoom. So, if you zoom in or out, even a little bit, normal functionality will resume. Even if you zoom into 1.1x zoom or out to 0.9x zoom, you will be able to use the feature. However, when you go back to 1x zoom, it won’t work.
This is rather annoying, as the majority of people use the camera at 1x zoom. This is the default camera, so plenty of people are going to run into this issue.
There is a workaround
As explained by 9To5Google, there’s a quick workaround to help you regain this functionality. This is just a Band-Aid solution until Google patches this issue. If you zoom in just a bit, tap the screen a few times, and zoom back out to 1x zoom, you should be able to use the tap to expose feature. Hopefully, Google patches this issue soon.
