The Weeknd Hints at Retiring Stage Name After His Next Album

0 33

Abel Tesfaye has been a dominant force in the music industry for the last decade, but his time as The Weeknd could be coming to a close.

In a new interview with W Magazine, the singer spoke about moving on from The Weeknd moniker.

“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” The Weeknd said. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”

Despite his urge to drop the stage name, The Weeknd is still very much working on new music. He recently dropped “Double Fantasy” with Future, hopped on several songs off Mike Dean’s latest effort, and said his upcoming album would be the conclusion of the trilogy that started with After Hours. That project, however, could be the finale of The Weeknd.

“The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd,” he explained. “This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

The Weeknd’s forthcoming HBO series The Idol is set to premiere on June 4 and there could be more music to coincide with it.
