This ain’t your granny’s Emerald City in ESCAPE FROM OZ

0 38

There have been a few stories inspired by the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s children’s fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the book on which the movie is based. Webtoons has a new incarnation of the fantasy adventure– Escape from Oz.

Created by Kelly Angel, this modern version stars Dot and her dog Toto. Dot isn’t loving the farm life (particularly the strange hybrid chicken sheep) and wants more from her time on the planet. This impulse pushes Dot to leave her aunt and uncle’s farm under the cover of night, but she and her trusty sidekick accidentally crash land in Oz, a place known for its nightlife and danger. There is also no way out.

Just like in the original, there is a yellow brick road that supposedly leads to the all-knowing Wizard who will help visitors escape the perils of this strange new world. Angel’s story is infused with way more humor than the work that inspired it, and some of that humor is just plain wackiness. Dot is still a likable protagonist like Dorothy before her, and it’s not hard to sympathize with her ups, downs, twists, and turns. And there are plenty.

Escape from Oz updates every Wednesday. The new web series only has a handful of episodes as of this writing, making it easy to jump in now!
