This is what Samsung’s triple-folding smartphone could look like

0 22

Samsung could be getting closer to launching a triple-folding smartphone or tablet. There have been numerous rumors about the company working on a tri-fold device, with some suggesting a 2023 launch for the first-gen model. A newly-published patent application from the Korean behemoth shows what the device could look like.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently published a patent application from Samsung for a tri-fold smartphone design. It shows a device with two hinges that fold the screen from two separate places, forming a zig-zag shape with three equal-sized parts. When fully unfolded, you get a tablet-sized display. But folding it gives you a compact device only as big as a regular smartphone.

According to the Korean publication The Guru, Samsung filed this patent application with the USPTO in December last year. Titled “How to use a display according to its folded state and an electronic device using it,” the accompanying documents describe the technical tidbits of this futuristic mobile device. Sensors embedded in the hinge and the display reportedly allow the device to detect the current folding state and adjust content on the screen accordingly.

For example, if the device is completely folded, only one part of the screen would be in use. In that case, the user interface will take the form of a regular smartphone with a tall aspect ratio. As you unfold the other two parts of the screen, the UI will smoothly transition into a tablet-like aspect ratio. Samsung’s existing dual-folding smartphones work similarly too. They allow seamless switching from the cover display to the making folding display.

Samsung may launch the world’s first triple-folding smartphone

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Samsung single-handedly created a market for foldable smartphones. It is the only company that has been consistently releasing new folding models for the past few years, and selling them globally. Several other firms have recently entered this niche as the market size grows. Google is also gearing up to launch its first-ever foldable device.

Samsung, on the other hand, is seemingly looking to take the foldable tech to a new level. It could be on its way to launching the world’s first triple-folding smartphone. The company has patented several designs for such a device in recent years. The latest patent application now goes into explaining its functioning as well. This suggests Samsung has made significant progress in its pursuit of this device. Stay tuned for more information about a triple-folding Galaxy smartphone.
