Thursday Night Football could be leaving Prime Video

0 39

Thursday Night Football could be heading to a standalone sports app from Amazon, instead of being built into the Prime Video app. That’s according to a new report from The Information.

Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy has mentioned before that the company is not done spending on sports rights. And even though they lost out on NFL Sunday Ticket to Google’s YouTube, there’s still more rights coming up. And therefore, Amazon thinks it’s smarter to build a standalone app for sports.

There’s a lot of questions that still need to be answered here though. Like would this sports app still be part of Prime Video, or be a separate subscription? It’s likely that it would be a separate subscription, due to how much sports rights cost these days. After all, Amazon is paying $1 billion per season for a decade for Thursday Night Football – and that’s just one game per week, typically.

It’s also unclear when this app is going to launch. It does sound like Amazon is in the early stages of building this app, so it might not be anytime soon. It also sounds like there’s still a lot of kinks to work out here.

Amazon could do something similar to Apple TV and MLS

Earlier this year, it was announced that Apple TV secured rights for MLS (Major League Soccer) for the next decade. However, it’s not all included with the Apple TV+ subscription. Instead, TV+ subscribers get some games for free, and will receive a discount on the cost of the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Basically, using it as a driver for subscriptions to Apple TV+. Similar to what ESPN+ does with the UFC.

That could be exactly what Amazon is building here with this app. Give Prime members a discount to this sports app, and provide some for free in the Prime Video app, as sort of a taste of what people are missing. Not only to drive more Prime memberships but also more subscribers to their sports app.

Though a lot of this is still speculation at this point. But we do know that Amazon is building a standalone sports app, as The Information is generally pretty spot on with its reporting.
