Tom Hanks’ niece shows Chet Hanks isn’t his only embarrassing relative

Tom Hanks may be an Oscar-winning American movie icon. But as a Hollywood patriarch who heads a family of established and up-and-coming nepo babies, he’s delivered mixed results.

The epic, public meltdown of Hanks’ niece Carly Reeves, while she appeared on ABC’s reality-competition series, “Claim to Fame,” shows why Hanks’ problematic son Chet Hanks may not be the only embarrassing member of his family.

When Reeves was eliminated from “Claim to Fame” on Monday night’s Season 2 premiere, she broke down in tears, stormed off the stage, could be heard belittling her fellow contestants and screamed that she deserved more “camera time.”

Of course, the fact that Reeves appeared on a show called “Claim to Fame” will probably lead people to question her motives.

But Reeves, who’s been trying to make it in acting for the past two decades, insisted to Entertainment Weekly that her uncle was supportive of her appearing on “Claim to Fame” — “excited” even — and happy if she made “a little money” from the reality TV business. She didn’t seem concerned that he might object to her sounded entitled and making claims that she was treated unfairly and deserved “more camera time.”

The show, hosted by brothers Kevin and Frankie Jonas, pits the unknown relatives of celebrities against one another in game in which they try to guess who each contestant is related to. The person who can conceal the identity of their famous family member the longest is awarded a $100,000 prize.

Reeves didn’t succeed in keeping her uncle’s identity a secret on the season’s very first episode, leading to her quick elimination, as Entertainment Weekly, the Daily Mail and Vanity Fair reported. Fellow contestant Hugo guessed that Reeves was related to Tom Hanks after correctly interpreting the clues of a park bench and ping-pong paddle as references to “Forrest Gump,” the 1994 film for which the actor won one of his two Academy Awards.

Reeves’ elimination clearly came as a shock to her. She made her disappointment and anger known as she left the set and began to pack up her belongings. She wept loudly, started to yell at the top of her lungs and hurled a slew of insults at the show, as well as her fellow contestants, who listened with stunned looks, the Daily Mail reported.

“The freaking clues were so freaking obvious,” Reeves yelled. “Even (contestant) Gabriel figured it out and he’s not even smart.”

“I didn’t even get to do any challenges,” Reeves continued. “I don’t deserve this. I should have more camera time. I should be here longer. No one expected that, no one.”

In a follow-up interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves acknowledged that she was “really upset.” She also said, “I think I overreacted a little bit, but I’m an emotional, very dramatic person.”

Reeves said she was “really angry” that she didn’t get to stay on the show — but she wasn’t angry at the show.

“I was just angry in general at myself, and at the fact that I was going home,” she continued. “And then that turned to complete despair and sadness. I even say, like, ‘I should get more camera time!’ That’s just so silly of me to say. But I also was just saying things out of my mouth.”

Certainly, Reeves’ outburst made for some good reality TV and has garnered her headlines — though perhaps not the kind a supposedly serious actor would probably want.

According to Reeves’ bio, she attended UCLA’s esteemed School of Theater, Film and Television, has tried her hand at sketch comedy and appeared on stage in dramatic roles, which she said helped her to “dig deep” into her art. Reeves told Entertainment Weekly that her uncle also has been supportive of her acting ambitions. She’s had parts in two of his movies: “Charlie Wilson’s War” in 2007 and, more prominently, in “Larry Crowne” in 2011.

Reeves told Entertainment Weekly that Hanks was fine with her appearing on “Claim to Fame” — a show that definitely allows her to capitalize on his fame.

Following Hanks into the entertainment industry certainly runs in the family. Colin Hanks, Hanks’ oldest son, has forged a busy career as an actor, mostly picking up supporting roles in movies and TV. On the other hand, there’s Chet Hanks, the rapper and Hanks’ oldest son with second wife Rita Wilson. He’s the family’s self-described “black sheep,” having gone to rehab for cocaine abuse. He’s also been accused of domestic abuse by an ex-girlfriend and put himself at the center of various controversies for saying and doing questionable things on social media.

With Reeves, Hanks was about to have a reality TV star in the family. She said her uncle was “excited” about her appearing on “Claim to Fame.” She said, “He was like, ‘Going on a show, that’s your choice. I hope you do well. Best of luck.’”

She also admitted to Entertainment Weekly that she had mixed feelings about him watching her having a public meltdown on national television — even if she thinks it’s “funny.”

“I mean, maybe I don’t want him to watch it because I don’t want to embarrass him for any reason,” Reeves said. “I hope I don’t embarrass him, but I don’t think I do.”

“So, I would love for him to watch it, because I think it’s hilarious,” continued. “He’s happy for me no matter what. He did ask me, ‘Did you make some money?’” Reeves laughed and said, “And I was like, ‘Yeah, I made a little bit.’ And he said, ‘Ok, good.’ So, he was happy that I made a little money.”
