Toyota HyRyder mid-sized SUV’s CNG trims launching in December: Details

0 37

Toyota’s newest SUV for the Indian market – the Urban Cruiser HyRyder – will soon get a CNG variant. The Toyota HyRyder CNG is all set for launch in December 2022. The first CNG powered SUV from Toyota, the HyRyder CNG will be powered by the 1.5 liter K15C petrol engine. The CNG kit will sit in the SUV’s boot. Bookings for the HyRyder CNG are now open across all Toyota dealerships across India, and deliveries will commence from the day of launch. The HyRyder CNG is likely be about Rs. 30,000-40,000 pricier than comparable petrol-powered variants, whose prices start from Rs. 10.48 lakh. Apart from the HyRyder, its badge engineered sibling – the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara – will also get a CNG option.

Maruti K15C engine converted to run on CNG

Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest CNG car maker, and it’s only fitting that Toyota has borrowed technology from the country’s leading automaker. The HyRyder CNG will use the 1.5 liter naturally aspirated K15C petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit, giving it petrol-CNG dual fuel capability. The engine  makes 102 Bhp-137 Nm while running on petrol, and gets 5 speed manual and 6 speed torque converter automatic options. Toyota is likely to offer both gearbox options on the Hyryder CNG.  While running on CNG, power and torque outputs will be lower, at 87 Bhp and 121 Nm. Key highlights on the K15C engine includes twin injectors (DualJet) on each cylinder, and variable valve timing (Dual VVT) for both the intake and exhaust valves.

HyRyder also available with 2 other engines: petrol mild-hybrid and petrol-strong hybrid

There are two more engine options on offer in the HyRyder – a 1.5 liter K15C naturally aspirated petrol mild hybrid with 102 Bhp-137 Nm, and a 1.5 liter TNGA petrol strong hybrid with a combined output of 114 Bhp.  While the K15C petrol gets an all wheel drive option with the 5 speed manual gearbox on the top-end trim, the strong hybrid engine – that drives the front wheels – gets the ability to be driven as a full-electric vehicle for short distances.

The strong hybrid powertrain on the Hyryder is offered with a single transmission: a CVT automatic gearbox. The standout aspect of the strong hybrid powertrain is its excellent fuel efficiency of nearly 28 Kmpl – unmatched even by diesel engines in the compact SUV segment. The 1.5 K15C petrol gets 5 speed manual and 6  speed torque converter automatic gearbox options.

The CNG option will complete the HyRyder’s engine variants

The CNG option on the HyRyder is primarily aimed at those who find the strong hybrid too expensive but want low running costs that a CNG powered car offers. The HyRyder CNG will be aimed mainly at city SUV buyers, and this explains why Toyota is likely to offer a torque converter automatic option with the CNG model. Previously, CNG powered cars were sold only with manual gearboxes. Maruti Suzuki recently bucked the trend with the Brezza CNG, which gets both manual and automatic gearbox options. Notably, the HyRyder CNG and Brezza CNG share the same engines and gearboxes.
