Toyota opens new NEV production line in Guangzhou
Toyota Motor this week brought on stream a new production line in China dedicated to new energy vehicles (NEVs), or battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to local reports.
The new line was built within an existing manufacturing complex located in Guangzhou in China’s Guangdong province, operated by the Japanese automaker’s local joint venture company Guangzhou Toyota Motor Company Ltd (GTMC).
GTMC was established in 2004 as a joint venture between Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) and Toyota Motor, with each company owning a 50% stake.
The new production line covers an area of 740,000 sq m and has a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year, increasing GTMC’s overall capacity to more than one million vehicles per year. As a result GTMC became the largest vehicle manufacturing company within the Toyota Motor group in terms of production capacity.
Earlier reports suggest GMTC’s sales in China rose by 31% to 845,608 units in the first ten months of 2022.
Toyota also has a China JV in Tianjin with FAW and another with BYD..
