The usage of Aadhaar based face authentications has reached 10.6 million in May, up by 38% since January. It is the second consecutive month in which 10 million authentications has been reached, the ministry of electronics and IT said in a statement.

Indicating the growing usage of the service, the report states that it was now being used by 47 entities including the state and central government departments as well as some banks.

The service could now be used for registering beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the PM Kisan schemes as well as for generating life certificates at home by pensioners. Andhra Pradesh was also using the service for its Jagananna Vidya Deevena and EBC Nestham schemes.

In addition to providing an alternate authentication for senior citizens the scheme is also being used to open bank accounts at a few leading banks through their business correspondents, the statement said. It also said that the authentication service was safe against video replay attacks and static photo authentication attempts while also providing features like ease of use and faster authentication.

In May there were 14.86 million Aadhaar updates and the total number of Aadhaar e-KYC transactions went above 15.2 billion by the end of the month, of which 254 million were done in May alone.

The artificial intelligence and machine learning based authentication service was developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on October 2021.
