Karnataka IT minister Priyank Kharge launched the state’s first K-VLSI (very large-scale integration) program to boost skilled talent for the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector at the Bengaluru Tech Summit.

The initiative, launched in collaboration with Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) and India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), Semiconductor Fabless Accelerator Lab (SFAL), will offer an advanced certification program in VLSI design and verification.

IIIT Bangalore’s Center of Excellence for Machine Intelligence will implement the program, along with industry training partner FutureWiz. The first cohort of 60 students, selected out of 2,000 applicants, will undergo a comprehensive, fully funded six-month course for the certificate.

The program, Kharge said, would provide added impetus to growth and talent availability for the VLSI Design sector in Karnataka and attract semiconductor companies to establish operations in the state.

VLSI design is the process of designing integrated circuits (ICs) by integrating thousands, millions, or even billions of transistors on a single chip.

Electronics Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) is a growth sector for Karnataka. The state has large-scale semiconductor industries thriving successfully, however, the availability of skilled resources can become a critical impediment to the growth of the ESDM industry, according to a statement by the KDEM.

“Training program will create a talent pool ‘First-Day-First-Hour’ ready for the VLSI Design Industry. The program will expose participants to real-world project problems giving them industry-ready skills,” said the statement.
